The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Counseling in the College of Education and Human Development invites applications for an open rank tenure/tenure-track faculty member specializing in school counseling. Clinical mental health applicants may apply, though school counseling is the priority for this position. This is a full-time, nine-month position that will start August 1, 2025.

UTSA's College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) is home to approximately 2,000 students who are enrolled in more than 30 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Department
The Department of Counseling offers three CACREP-accredited programs: Master of Science (M.S.) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Master of Education (M.Ed.) in School Counseling, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counselor Education and Supervision. Each year, the department serves approximately 450 students across the three programs. The M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program won the Robert Frank Outstanding Counselor Education Program Award in 2011 and 2019. The Department of Counseling houses several programs such as the Bilingual Counseling Certificate, the Neurofeedback training program, and the integrated behavioral health PITCH Expanded Providers Program. Currently, the program is undergoing reaccreditation with a site visit scheduled for Spring 2025. The Department of Counseling is comprised of 10 full-time tenured/tenure-track and seven fixed-term faculty members, with additional adjunct faculty who support the program's mission. The faculty rigorously engage in research, publications, and grants, and have been active in professional service at the state and national levels, serving in numerous leadership roles within the American Counseling Association and its divisions and Chi Sigma Iota.
Position Summary
The Department seeks exceptional candidates with (1) promise for (entry level assistant professor applicants) or track record of (mid-level assistant, associate, and full applicants) high-quality scholarship and service to the profession; (2) excellence in graduate education; (3) a clear and strong counselor and counselor educator identity; and (4) a demonstrated commitment to a culture of excellence as described in the American Counseling Association and the American School Counselor Association codes of ethics, and to serving the needs of students at an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Candidates who have not completed their doctoral degree will not be considered, yet those who have a firm defense date by the end of Spring 2025 will be considered. Applicants who are ABD must provide written confirmation from their dissertation advisor of their dissertation defense date prior to an on-campus interview. For associate/full professor candidates who have achieved tenure at another institution, tenure at UTSA will be contingent upon Board of Regents approval.

- A well-defined research agenda with promise for (entry-level assistant professor applicants) or evidence of (mid-level assistant, associate, and full applicants) robust, high-impact research and publications in refereed journals.
- A commitment to pursuing external funding with training and support (assistant professor applicants); a commitment to and a demonstration of pursuing external funding (associate and full professor applicants).
- A record of teaching excellence.
- Skills for multiple teaching delivery methods.
- A demonstrated commitment to a culture of excellence as described in the American Counseling Association and American School Counselor Association ethical codes.
- The ability and desire to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of first-generation, low-income students, and to fulfill the mission of an HSI.
- The ability and desire to work collegially with faculty from multiple specializations.
Preferred Qualifications
Ideally, candidates will:
- Be certified or certification eligible as a school counselor in the state of Texas (CSC).
- Have expertise in the field of school counseling and demonstrate commitment to contribute and enhance the school counseling program through program leadership and scholarship.
- Be licensed or license eligible in the state of Texas (LPC, LPC-S).
- Have a focused research agenda that uniquely contributes to current faculty expertise and strengthens the program's national stature.
- Demonstrate foundational leadership experience and willingness to further develop leadership skills (assistant professor applicants); demonstrated leadership experience and willingness to engage in leadership roles (associate/full professor applicants).
- Have experience with CACREP-accredited procedures.
- Be interested in pursuing community engagement.
