Description


JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Pharmacy plans, organizes, controls, and supervises activities according to policies, standards of practice of the profession, and State and Federal laws. The position recommends innovations in the practice and function of the pharmacy to administration and carries out mutually agreed upon programs and initiatives. The Director of Pharmacy should provide support, mentoring and oversight of the activities of the clinical pharmacists and other staff.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS:

  • Functions in accordance with standard written policy & procedures, guidelines, and state and federal regulations.
  • Communicates with other pharmacy team members and caregivers in an effective and positive manner. Demonstrates emotional control and intelligence in managing work relationships.
  • Ensures the department is in compliance with JCAHO requirements, Drug Enforcement Administration, State Board of Pharmacy, USP 797/800/795, policies and procedures, and other Federal and State regulations.
  • Ensures that the department is in compliance with all applicable safety and security practices, infection control policies, fire and safety and disaster planning.
  • Establishes quality improvement, fiscal, productivity, and patient satisfaction goals and objectives in conjunction with upper management and corporate leadership.
  • Responsible for department planning, goals, and objectives.
  • Provides leadership to the department through effective organization, direction of activities, and appropriate delegation of functions, services and communicating these goals and objectives to the team.
  • Responsible for development, implementation, and regular review/maintenance of Department specific policy and procedures.
  • Responsible for the effective recruitment, selection, orientation, training, promotion, evaluation, retention and termination of department employees.
  • Routinely assesses departmental education needs and provides the appropriate learning experiences, (on the job training, workshop, in services, etc.)
  • Determines and documents the effectiveness of department employees.
  • Establishes job performance standards, functions, responsibilities and the qualifications of department employees and provides insightful and timely feedback and evaluations as appropriate.
  • Directs the activities of and provides professional and technical guidance to pharmacy personnel.
  • Communicates the institution’s Mission and Philosophy to department employees and integrates with departmental operations.
  • Maintains appropriate controls of department functions to ensure smooth, effective operations.
  • Promotes teamwork among staff, peers, physicians, nurses, and others.
  • Promotes multi-disciplinary teamwork in order to meet the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Supervises the maintenance and dissemination of drug information through in-service education of personnel, consultation with patients, staff, and medical staff.
  • Anticipates the needs and issues of customers/suppliers in order to ensure effective departmental operations and/or meet their needs.
  • Continuously evaluates the quality of services and/or products provided to the department’s customers.
  • Monitors and assists with the collection, documentation, and reporting of quality assessment and improvement data.
  • Provides leadership to new program development, implementation and evaluation and acts as a consultant in areas of expertise.
  • Actively participates in committees, task forces, projects, and provides leadership as assigned.
  • Represents Pharmacy Shared Services through active participation in outside activities and organizations.
  • Maintains professional competency sufficient to meet current and future needs of the facility.

Additional Clinical Pharmacist Duties

  • Interprets orders and transcribes or verifies them accurately and efficiently into the pharmacy computer system.
  • Accurately compounds and dispenses pharmaceuticals.
  • Monitors drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies and appropriateness of drug and dose.
  • Provides accurate and timely medication information to healthcare staff and patients.
  • Documents all clinical activities and interventions accurately and completely.
  • Sustains the hospital formulary, minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic interchanges and promoting rational drug therapy selection.
  • Supervises and assists pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other support staff effectively.
  • Prioritizes work and leads others to comply with facility medication, turn-around time policy and procedure and identify areas for improved efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S. or PharmD from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy required.
  • Active Pharmacist license in good standing with the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy required.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy preferred.
  • Three (3) years of hospital pharmacy experience with two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience required.
  • Five (5) years of hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Knowledge with 340B program preferred.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in the legal responsibilities of the pharmacist to the facility and all state and federal laws and regulations governing pharmacy services.
  • Experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and Electronic Medical Record systems required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification (required if attending Code Blue) preferred.
