JOB SUMMARY:
The Public Health Microbiologist III is responsible for conducting advanced and specialized microbiological and molecular testing adhering to established policies, procedures and with minimal supervision. Assists with training of internal and external health partners such as LRN sentinel laboratories and support staff. Assists the Microbiologist Manager with daily and annual operations of the department. The Public Health Microbiologist III Supervises the daily operations of the laboratory and the Microbiologist I and II.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS:
- Facilitates testing and performs complex microbiological exams, PCR and ELISA testing, monitors results reporting in timely manner and follows policies and procedures without direct supervision.
- Applies knowledge to improve workflow and supports Manager with training new employees.
- Performs, evaluates and records quality control and instrument maintenance and monitors QC/QA. Signs off on QC/QA log monthly as Technical Supervisor.
- Addresses potential QC/QA gaps, performs corrective actions and reports actions with supervisor.
- Assumes some supervisory duties in the PHLET laboratory manager’s absence.
- Assists the manager with supervision of the section, as requested.
- Assures proper inventory and places supply orders. Monitors inventory to contain costs.
- Assists manager by writing procedures, performing validation studies and implementation of new testing protocols.
- Follows biosafety and security practices as written and reports noncompliant events.
- Reviews and plans for safety protocols along with the Biosafety Officer.
- Assists with onboarding of new staff and associated training and documentation.
- Position requires work with Select Agents in BSL3 laboratory and use of personal protective equipment.
- Ensure compliance and supports manager in preparation of required grant reporting and preparations for audits and inspections with regulatory agencies (CDC, CLIA, DSHS, others).
- Must be certified in packaging and shipping of infectious agents.
- Must obtain clearance from the Department of Justice.
- Prepares and provides training of various health partners.
- Shares rotating on call 24/7 with other team members.
- Serves as Alternative Responsible Official as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
ACCOMPANYING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to operate and maintain standard and high complexity laboratory equipment and appropriate PPE in a BSL2 and BSL3 environment.
- Efficiency in Microsoft Office Products and laboratory reporting systems.
- Great customer service skills, able to communicate effectively and exchange information using good judgement.
- Ability to work as part of a team with internal and external partners.
- Ability to navigate stressful situations and respond professionally and according to laboratory standards.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor of Science MT or CLS, with ASCP certification (or equivalent).
- Five (5) years of experience in a high complexity laboratory (must meet qualifications for CLIA Technical Supervisor).
- Master of Science in Microbiology or related field with three (3) years of experience in a high complexity laboratory preferred.
- 1-2 years of supervising others preferred.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES:
- ASCP certification (or equivalent).
