JOB SUMMARY
Possesses knowledge and skill necessary to meet standards for professional practice specified in Texas Nurse Practice Act. Competent Clinician: Experienced, knowledgeable and skilled in specialty area. Competently functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Recognizes when she/he needs assistance and seeks appropriate resources.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/CRITICAL TASKS
- Practice is characterized by predominantly interdependent decision-making, problem focused, and patient centered care.
- Possesses critical thinking skills, able to manage unexpected or emergent situations commonly seen in assigned specialty population in provision of care.
- Serves as a resource for nursing staff, can manage commonly seen contingency situations that arise within the clinical unit.
- Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents the daily care of assigned patients. Identifies nursing diagnosis/patient care needs, individualizes care plan, and revises plan of care as needed.
- Executes physician's orders for all assigned patients; administers medications and treatments and delivers population specific competent nursing care in accordance with UTHSCT's policies, procedures, and standards.
- Performs routine technical procedures/skills in specialty area assigned. Performs and reports Point of Care testing.
- Accountable for the identification and reduction of unsafe practices that could cause harm to patients.
- Provides basic patient/family instruction and healthcare teaching.
- Promotes positive guest and patient relations.
- Respects and supports patient rights.
- Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality of information and records at all times. Prioritizes and organizes work so that required assignments are completed within a specified time frame.
- Practices basic cost containment for patients and the unit.
- Attends/participates in unit meetings/activities and supports the philosophy and goals of the unit department and organization.
- Other duties as assigned.
ACCOMPANYING KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES
- Participates in unit-based quality improvement program.
- Adheres to internal controls established for department.
- Required to maintain competency in the patient safety functions related to their position.
- Participates and supports Hospital Performance Improvement activities.
- Completion of Annual Mandatory Training, TB testing, and required licensure and certifications before expiration date.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment including telephones, facsimiles, copiers, personal computers and printers.
- Ability to operate medical equipment such as I.V. pumps, portable oxygen, defibrillators, telemetry monitors, wound vacs, hospital beds, and other equipment required for patient care.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred.
- Bilingual a plus.
- EMR experience preferred.
REQUIRED LICENSES/ CERTIFICATION
- Must possess and maintain a current RN license to practice in Texas.
- Must possess and maintain current BLS certification.
- ALS preferred at hire, required within 6 months of hiring.
- Specialty certification preferred at hire and preferred within 12 months of eligibility.
