What are the responsibilities and job description for the HCSS Neurodiagnostic Technician position at University of Texas Medical Branch?
JOB SUMMARY :
To provide advanced technical skills necessary to perform one or more of the following electro neurodiagnostic procedures : electroencephalogram (EEG), intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM), long term monitoring (LTM), evoked potential (EP), and nerve conduction studies (NCV).
MAJOR DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS :
- Establishes lab protocols according to American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS) Guidelines.
- Participates in tutoring, demonstrating, and mentoring other team members.
- Performs electro neurodiagnostic studies as per written protocols.
- Explains procedures to patient, elicits and records medical history from patient and / or chart.
- Applies standard scalp electrodes to meet the standard 10 / 20 placement.
- Records the studies and independently makes alteration of the test protocol based on history and on the ongoing study. Recognize normal and abnormal variants in study recording and acts accordingly.
- Recognizes and corrects electrical and electronic malfunction.
- Monitors and reviews raw study and video data.
- Prepares the completed hard copy of neurodiagnostic studies for interpretation.
- Completes the “Technician Impression” sheet which serves as the preliminary report.
- Edits and archives neurodiagnostic recordings.
- Competently performs routine inpatient and outpatient neurodiagnostic procedures.
- Sets up and aids with area specific neurodiagnostic procedures.
- Provides for patient safety related to age and condition.
- Always maintains patient privacy and confidentiality of information and records.
- Provides and maintains a clean, safe environment, free of obstacles, and conducive to a professional environment.
- Maintains isolation procedures and follows infection control measures.
- Maintains patient care areas with appropriate supplies and equipment.
- Notifies the Senior Neurodiagnostic Technologist and / or on-coming staff when equipment is missing or broken.
- Assists with patient requests for other hospital services.
- Communicates clearly and professionally to all multidisciplinary team members, including nursing staff.
- Works well independently with minimal supervision, but also can work well in small groups.
- Participates in and supports quality improvement activities.
- Demonstrates acceptable productivity and practices cost containment.
- Proficient in the best electrode application method using paste, collodion, or electrode caps as appropriate
- Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
- Maintains continuing education requirements of the American Board of Registered Electrodiagnostic Technicians (ABRET) and / or the Americian Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologist (AAET) for respective credential by reviewing literature and attending educational meetings for the latest accepted practices and electoral safety relevant to equipment and testing.
