Center for Human NutritionThe mission of a faculty in the Center for Human Nutrition at UT Southwestern is to understand the study of abnormal metabolism and to draw out the contributions of nutrition and genetics in human beings. Scientific evidence indicates that nutrition plays a role in the cause of many chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, obesity, fatty liver disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, and cancer. Research opportunities through the Center bring fundamental insights into nutritionally-related diseases and treatment techniques. The study of human nutrition at UT Southwestern is divided into three areas of concentration: the cause, the prevention, and the treatment of disease in humans.
Job SummaryThe Burgess lab is hiring an analytical chemist. This lab studies the regulation of metabolism and its role in disease. The primary responsibilities of this Analytical Chemistry position will be to prepare biological samples by performing simple chemical derivations and analyze samples by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. The position reports to a faculty member in the Center for Human Nutrition, UT SW Medical Center (Dallas, TX), and will work with a team of senior members of the group.
Experience and EducationBachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, or other engineering-focused majors with zero (0) to four (4) years year related experience.
Lab Duties- Performs sample preparation, such as tissue extractions and chemical derivatizations.
- Prepares samples for analysis by MS and NMR. Obtains LC/MS, GC/MS and NMR data using existing protocols and helps to validate new protocols.
- Performs data analysis and evaluates metabolite tracer labeling.
- Quantifies, records, and evaluates data obtained from work assignments.
- Provides analytical chemistry expertise in the performance of laboratory measurements, data collection, and analysis using chromatography and mass spectrometry.
- Selects and determines correct analytical methods in approach to research investigation and in design of investigational goals. Adapts or develops methods to meet research goals.
- Makes and records observations and measurements. Compiles and collates resulting experimental data.
- Sets up and operates HPLC, GC, and MS instruments and other equipment used for the extraction and preparation of samples.
- Trouble shoots, repairs, and adapts equipment.
- Researches options and makes recommendations for new equipment and supplies. Devising research methods, preparing technical specifications, and specifying laboratory test equipment and processes.
- Conducts research to develop or improve analytical techniques, methodology, procedures. Investigating application of instruments in analysis.
- Assembles and maintains equipment in accordance with specifications for analyzing data samples.
- Performs statistical and other analyses and prepares technical reports regarding methodology and results.
- May provide working supervision to technicians or research personnel of lower grade.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
