Brief Description of Duties

The Program Associate for Youth Development will implement youth development activities through 4-H Youth Development Clubs in DC Public & Chartered Schools and Community-based Organizations focused specifically on Food and Nutrition Translation, Food Safety and other related youth development programs in the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES). The Program Associate reports directly to the Director of the Center for Nutrition Diet and Health and will utilize the community resourcing and volunteer training model by identifying and training as volunteers, community experts to implement 4-H clubs. The incumbent is expected to perform assigned duties with a high degree of independence, professionalism, initiative, and efficiency, exercising good judgment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establishes Food and Nutrition Translation, Food Safety and other related 4-H youth development clubs in DC Public and Charter Schools and community-based Organizations using the community resourcing and volunteer training model.
  • Develops a database and network of Food and Nutrition Translation and Food Safety experts from universities, federal and district agencies and community-based non-profit organizations to support youth development activities in 4-H Clubs.
  • Provide Volunteer Leadership Training to network of Food and Nutrition Translation and Food Safety experts in compliance with 4-H youth development program activities.
  • Identify and work with DC Public and Chartered Schools staff to implement 4-H Clubs focused on Food and Nutrition Translation and Food Safety and other related activities.
  • Aligns trained experts with schools and community-based 4-H Clubs to implement activities and assess for continuous improvement.
  • Completes monthly planning and accomplishment reports for assessment and to measure and report quarterly and annual impacts.
  • Completes annual performance management review with self-assessment for improvement through professional development activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned including special assignments related to capacity development needs of the center, college, and community.

  • Works effectively and collaboratively with other staff in CAUSES and the University.
  • Participates in CAUSES wide meetings, task forces, and projects.
  • Practices effective time management, and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Manages resources incl. time, materials, and staff in a cost-effective manner.
Required Competencies

  • Excellent leadership, management, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with CAUSES and UDC faculty, staff and students, DC agencies, federal agencies, private and non-profit sector contacts, and other relevant constituencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems, devise practical solutions and exercise sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of the methods and principles for assessing and improving program effectiveness.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently, to be dependable, organized and creative.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task, problem-solve, work independently and perform in a goal-oriented environment with tight deadlines.
  • A proven commitment to continuous improvement and to proactive, outcomes-oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties described.
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn about youth development principles and practices.
Minimum Job Requirements

  • The incumbent is required to hold a bachelor's degree and relevant professional experience (master's degree preferred) appropriate to the programs and mission of CAUSES and the responsibilities and duties outlined in the position description.
  • Knowledge of the principles of modern office procedures, systems and ICT tools.
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and procedures of Federal and District agencies or the ability to acquire such knowledge quickly.
  • Minimum of four years of experience in increasingly responsible youth development community outreach and training.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
