Position Summary
The Academic Advisor I at the School of Professional Studies ( SPS ) is responsible for providing engaged academic advising to support student retention and success and will include providing guidance on degree program options, academic and curricular requirements, and course planning. The Academic Advisor reports to the Director of Student Services.
Position will physically work out of assigned SPS satellite location on a military bases; thus ability to successfully pass a military level background check is required to gain base access. Military base assignments include Ft. Sam Houston JBSA , Lackland AFB , and Randolph AFB .

Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the advisor’s specific responsibilities.
Required Work Experience
One (1) year of experience in advising, student development, or related academic function within higher education or professional position in a high school setting such as counselor, teacher, or administrator. (At the department’s discretion additional education or professional experience in a field directly related to the advisor’s specific responsibilities may substitute for experience.)
Preferred Qualifications
Position will physically work out of assigned SPS satellite location on a military bases; thus ability to successfully pass a military level background check is required to gain base access.
Work Hours
Mon to Fri 7:30am to 4:30am, with extended hours as needed especially during peaks. Occasional weekend and evening hours.

- Advise students concerning schedules, majors, hours, probation, and/ or suspension and provide information regarding curriculum requirements, academic policy, and other related issues as they arise.
- Guide student through the process of understanding requirements and academic options to facilitate the student’s pursuit of fields of interest.
- Provide access to information and resources for the achievement of academic, career and personal goals; act as an advocate and referral source and provides consistent outreach and follow up services; help to coordinate advising with career planning.
- Provide timely information and advice to students (individually and groups) regarding the development of educational course/degree plan options, the resources available, and university policies.
- Organize and assist in departmental projects, providing audits for graduating seniors, and submitting substitutions to the Dean/Associate Dean for approval.
- Train students and staff involved in academic advising.
- Represent SPS / UIW at various related internal and external meetings and events and help to position SPS and advising as highly respected and proactive.
- Facilitate communication of the vision, mission, policies and procedures and academic goals of the University while assisting with their development and implementation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Provide academic advising services for students in their degree program;
- Assist students in developing a comprehensive academic plan;
- Review student progress; refer to tutor and other student support services as appropriate;
- Advise student on appropriate majors and careers opportunities;
- Follow departmental guide for tracking progress of assigned students; and
- Implement intervention strategies and communicate outcomes as appropriate to aid in student success;
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Collaborate and engage with university partners to maintain strong relationships and seamless advising processes;
- Retrieve, review, and report data;
- Serve as point of contact for issues and concerns and escalate to supervisor when necessary;
- Attend university events and serve on committees;
- Develop and present information to new and continuing students, parents, and faculty; and
- Coordinate and communicate academic advisor activities throughout the various advising cycles (e.g., start of the semester, registration prep, registration, drop dates, etc.).
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) or more years of advising experience in higher education.
- Master’s Degree.
- Experience with database management systems: Banner, DegreeWorks, etc.
- Bi-lingual (English/Spanish).

- Ability to lift up to 20lbs for table set-up/tear-down at events.
- Ability to reach overhead, bend, squat to retrieve marketing materials.
- Ability to push/pull equipment carts holding up to30 lbs.
- Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time.
- Ability to regularly move about bases, campus and event venues to actively engage faculty, staff, and potential/current students, as well as attend meetings on and off campus.
