Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose
The Lab Manager is responsible for oversight, support and operation of the Department of Biological Sciences mass spectrometer and other departmental instruments, while coordinating with and providing technical and pedagogical support to faculty, lab instructors and students.
Essential Functions
  • Assisting in the operation of the mass spectrometry instrument, including Inventorying and ordering laboratory supplies
  • Keeping accurate and detailed records of experiments and results, analyzing data using software packages and bioinformatics tools, managing and archiving data files as required by federal granting agencies, and distributing and record keeping of data files for faculty and students
  • Updating computer software for the mass spectrometer and other departmental shared instruments
  • Maintaining and coordinating the servicing of the mass spectrometer and other shared departmental lab equipment including microscopes, autoclaves, plate readers, gel documentation and shaking incubators.
  • Training Masters and undergraduate students on appropriate proteomic sample preparation
  • Coordinating all the lab exercises, including the purchasing of supplies and equipment, for Biology 160 Proteomics and some additional lab exercises for Molecular Techniques Biology 159/259.
  • Developing modules and demonstration exercises for other classes including pre-pharmacy Biology 61, Biology 101 Genetics and Biology 145 Microbiology.
  • Assist in the occasional care and maintenance of research organisms if the primary investigators are unable to do so.
  • Assist with maintaining chemical inventory, and coordinate the disposal of chemical, biological and lab waste.
  • Must be able to work a late shift until 8pm at least 3 weeknights.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline, or must have met the requirements of a Master's degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline by July 1, 2025.
  • One (1) year experience with sample preparation and data analysis for proteomics experiments.
  • One (1) year experience demonstrated advanced skill in the handling and operation of equipment typically used in biology laboratories (i.e. autoclaves, dishwashers and liquid nitrogen tanks)
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Learning Management Systems like Canvas.

Work requires frequent periods of standing and walking. Moderate periods of sitting and infrequent periods of bending, stooping, reaching and kneeling.

Moderate use of computers with repetitive use of hands and wrists.
Exposure to chemical and hazardous waste typical in biological lab. May be requested to lift up to forty (40) lbs.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Schedule is dependent on department need. Typically, eight (8) hours per day and ve (5) days per week. Must be able to work a late shift until 8:00pm at least three (3) weeknights.

Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
