Chair of the Tandy School of Computer Science

Job Description

The College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) invites applications and nominations for the Chair of the Tandy School of Computer Science. The next Chair will have the opportunity to inspire and lead the School to the next level of prominence as the University of Tulsa (TU) invests and expands in several strategic research areas to support the ambitious goal of becoming both a research-intensive R1 institution and a top 75 school in the near future. To support this focused growth initiative, the College will significantly increase its faculty in the next 5 years and seeks inspired, driven academics to join it in this mission.

The Tandy School of Computer Science at the University of Tulsa offers B.S. degrees in Computer Science (since 1972), Computer Simulation and Gaming (since 2015), and Data Science (since 2023). The B.S. in Computer Science has been accredited by ABET since 1988. At the graduate level, the Tandy School offers an M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and jointly administers the Ph.D. in Computer Engineering with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Its faculty are committed to expanding its research and academic strengths in artificial intelligence, trustworthy autonomy, bioinformatics, cyber-physical systems and networking. The Tandy School has a strong connection with community partners, including productive relationships with local industry.

The successful candidate will be an experienced leader with an accomplished record of scholarship and dedication to excellence in teaching and research. In addition, they shall possess a forward-looking vision that will address the needs of the faculty, staff, students, and the nation.

The characteristic duties of the chair will be :

  • An advocate for the school.
  • Teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Involvement in active research that complements and enhances existing research areas in the school and the college.
  • Overseeing and managing school faculty and staff, including performance reviews, contract renewals, and professional development.
  • Leading efforts to recruit and retain talented faculty, encouraging diversity and inclusivity within the school.
  • Coordination of school recruiting of prospective undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Coordination of advising and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Supporting and promoting academic student activities including student associations, activities, tutoring services, research initiatives.
  • Promoting student-student and student-faculty engagements such as open houses, meet and greet of prospective students and school meetings.
  • Coordinate CS Advisory Board meetings.
  • Champion the school's outreach efforts and promote student and faculty achievements and recognitions both across the university and to stakeholders such as prospective students as well as academic and industrial partners and peers. Oversight and ownership of the school budget.
  • Oversight of regular program accreditation, program assessment, program review, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Collaborate with the faculty in the school to develop the course offerings for each semester.
  • Providing leadership for all aspects of the school.
  • Balancing the school's needs and the college's broader interests through effective communication and collaboration.

The University of Tulsa is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a city with a population of over 1,000,000 in the metro area. Underpinned by an endowment in excess of $1.4 billion, TU is a private university with approximately 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering and Computer Science, Health Sciences, and Law. The College of Engineering and Computer Science has a global reputation in Energy and Cyber Security, with long-standing scholarship contributing to service programs supported by the NSF and the National Security Agency. TU also owns a large-scale research facility that has hosted numerous Industry / University partnerships and consortia for more than 50 years. Computer Science faculty are active participants in these partnerships and consortia. The College is home to 55 tenured / tenure-track faculty and 26 teaching faculty and has seven PhD programs that produce excellent scientists and engineers for placement as professors and researchers at universities, national labs, and industries across the country and the world.

Required Qualifications

The Chair will have the following qualifications :

  • Earned Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or a related field and a record of teaching, research, and scholarly accomplishments commensurate with the rank of full professor with tenure.
  • Experience in building and sustaining collaborative cross-disciplinary research.
  • Experience with program accreditation processes for ABET and other national accreditation bodies.
  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with alumni, industry partners, and federal funding agencies.
  • Excellent communication and managerial skills to support and empower faculty, students, and staff.
  • Experience in framing and executing enrollment and recruitment efforts.
  • Experience with budgets and personnel matters.
