Job Summary

Human Resources Generalists

Perform various human resources duties in areas such as recruiting, employment, compensation, benefits, training, employee relations, or other special projects. Provide guidance on human resources operational issues, employment law, and develop new programs and initiatives to meet management needs. Partner with management teams to facilitate the delivery of HR services as appropriate. Serve as contact for employees and answer questions regarding HR policies and procedures.

University of Utah Human Resources is committed to customer service, efficiency, and ensuring University leaders have the capacity to manage their divisions. The Human Resources Generalist will be a member of the HR team and will work closely with an Associate HR Director.

The Human Resources Generalist may be assigned a number of functional areas on campus, acting as the first point of contact for those areas. This hybrid position requires the incumbent to work a minimum of two days per week on campus, attend necessary in-person meetings, and also allows for telecommuting.

Responsibilities

Human Resources Generalist, I

Perform various human resources duties in areas such as recruiting, employment, compensation, benefits, training, employee relations, or other special projects. Provide guidance on human resources operational issues, employment law, and develop new programs and initiatives to meet management needs. Partner with management teams to facilitate the delivery of HR services as appropriate. Serve as contact for employees and answer questions regarding HR policies and procedures. Basic skill set and proficiency required. Conduct work assignments as directed. Closely supervised with little latitude for independent judgment.

Typically requires a bachelor’s 2 years of directly related work experience or a master’s degree.

This is an Entry-Level position in the General Professional track.

Human Resources Generalist, II

Perform various human resources duties in areas such as recruiting, employment, compensation, benefits, training, employee relations, or other special projects. Provide guidance on human resources operational issues, employment law, and develop new programs and initiatives to meet management needs. Partner with management teams to facilitate the delivery of HR services as appropriate. Serve as contact for employees and answer questions regarding HR policies and procedures. Moderate skill set and proficiency in discipline required. Conduct work assignments of increasing complexity, under moderate supervision with some latitude for independent judgment.

Typically requires a bachelor’s 4 years or a master’s 2 years of directly related work experience.

This is a Developing-Level position in the General Professional track.

Other Responsibilities as defined by department - Human Resources Generalist Responsibilities:

  • Manage, organize, and execute high-volume inbound requests for employment updates and Human Resource-related information
  • Communicate proactively with clients about task updates and completion
  • Consult with department management and leadership on Human Resource concerns
  • Provide support to employees on various Human Resource-related topics such as onboarding and resources
  • Build strong relationships with clients to understand business needs and organization
  • Partner with supervisors and managers on recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and offboarding processes
  • Maintain a strong knowledge base of Human Resource practices, University policies, employment law, and University resources
  • Use independent judgment to handle and resolve customer service needs and address confidential situations in a professional manner
  • Facilitate meetings, group discussions, and projects
  • May participate on various committees
  • Effectively prioritize and organize tasks for timely execution

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT : 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Human Resources Generalist, I: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) with up to 2 years of directly related work experience or a master’s degree.

Human Resources Generalist, II : Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) 2 years of directly related work experience.
