Work Schedule Summary

The work schedule for this position starts in early June with staff training the week of June 2-6. Most of our summer camp weeks run Monday – Thursday. We will have three weeks that run Monday – Wednesday (weeks of June 9, July 21, and August 11). Camp begins the week of June 9 and runs through the week of August 11. Facilitators work weekdays from about 7:45am-4:45pm. Fridays (Thursdays of short weeks) will have staff attending an hour-long morning staff meeting. Schedules may adjust slightly.

About the Role: As a Summer Camp Facilitator, you’ll lead hands-on, engaging STEAM activities for elementary-aged children, helping them explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and math in a fun, interactive setting. You’ll have access to thoughtfully designed curricula, fully stocked supplies, dedicated support staff, and top-tier training to ensure an incredible experience for both you and the campers. This is a temporary summer position with the potential to become a permanent part-time role—a fantastic opportunity for educators, aspiring teachers, and science enthusiasts looking to grow their skills in informal education.

Responsibilities

Lead and Support Participants – Assist in the supervision, guidance, and engagement of program participants to ensure a positive and enriching experience.

  • Prepare and Enhance Learning Experiences – Review curricula before programs, provide feedback, and adapt activities as needed to optimize engagement and learning.
  • Manage Classroom & Materials – Prepare, set up, and clean up classroom and lab spaces, ensuring all materials are organized and ready for use.
  • Model Professionalism & Mentorship – Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and enthusiasm while fostering the growth and development of both participants and assistant staff.
  • Create an Inclusive & Safe Environment – Communicate and facilitate programs with an inviting and engaging approach, ensuring a welcoming and secure space for all participants.
  • Collaborate & Contribute – Work effectively as part of a team, offering support, encouragement, and constructive feedback to staff and participants.
  • Commit to Ongoing Learning – Attend all Museum-provided trainings to continuously develop skills and stay updated on best practices.
  • Deliver Exceptional Guest Experiences – Provide outstanding customer service, ensuring a memorable and meaningful experience for all participants and staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Two years of related experience, ability to use logic and reasoning to prioritize tasks, expertise using MS Office software, and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required. Database experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree in a related field may be preferred.

Preferences

  • Proven experience (formal or informal) in developing and delivering programs for elementary-aged children.
  • Background as a group counselor or staff member in camps, after-school programs, or other youth-focused settings.
  • Passion for teaching science and nature-based content in engaging and interactive ways.
  • Experience leading STEAM activities and facilitating inquiry-based learning.
  • Ability to adapt activities to support diverse learning styles and abilities.
  • Strong instructional and classroom management skills.
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
  • Bilingual candidates, especially Spanish speakers, are strongly encouraged to apply.
