Job Summary

The Marriott Library invites applicants interested in contributing a vital voice to achieving the library’s work with its unique historical and creative holdings. This position will interact with Special Collections faculty and staff on complex, long-term projects involving multiple contributors and collection areas. In the role, the Program Manager will guide individuals and teams (including university collaborators, donors, and community partners) in setting and achieving timelines and goals. Projects may include creating websites or digital exhibitions for collections and initiatives; communicating with archive creators and prospective donors to plan the logistics of collection transfer; charting priorities for digitization and outreach projects; supporting programmatic activities such as teaching sessions, public events, and community workshops; and assisting curators with tracking information using our collection management system.

This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Special Collections.

This position is currently designed as a hybrid of on-campus and remote work. Specific telecommuting arrangements will be based on the needs of the position and authorized at the discretion of the supervisor.

Responsibilities

Working with teams representing a variety of collection departments and functional areas, the successful candidate will assist with implementing diverse creative projects drawn from the full range of primary research material in Special Collections. Working in a close collaborative relationship with the Associate Dean, the Program Manager will implement Special Collections’ strategies by providing operational knowledge and support. The position will assist in streamlining processes, creating efficiencies, liaising with other Library divisions and campus units, and overseeing activities to complete projects and achieve the goals of the division. While collection knowledge or archival training is not assumed, the position provides the opportunity to work with fascinating documents, media, and objects from a dynamic variety of topics and historical periods.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

  • Familiarity with archival and Special Collections environment, materials, and practices;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Ability to take direction while acting independently;
  • Organizational and planning ability to ensure that lengthy projects continue to move forward and achieve success according to an agreed-upon timeline;
  • Interest in local and regional history, art and performance, religious and ethnic communities, and other topics comprising major strengths of the collections;
  • Supporting patron research, including a regular Reading Room shift and reference responses;
  • Experience working with cultural heritage material or primary research collections
  • Project management training or experience;
  • Facility with planning or organizing multiple complex projects with fixed timelines or due dates;
  • Familiarity in one or more topics among the subjects of particular focus of Special Collections.
