The Specimen Processor is responsible for receiving, sorting, and preparing medical specimens for laboratory testing, ensuring proper labeling, documentation, and storage of specimens, as well as maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment. Working under direct supervision, they learn the proper handling of all specimens received in the laboratory and prepare them for testing. The position includes functions such as matching patient information, data entry, aliquoting, scanning documents, and laboratory supply management. Attention to detail, organization, and adherence to safety protocols are crucial in this role. This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Responsibilities
- Processes specimens immediately as they become available.
- Enters patient demographics and processes specimen orders using the appropriate LIS applications.
- Orders all tests indicated on the requisition.
- Maintains accurate lab work records.
- Handles and labels all specimens and paperwork appropriately.
- Documents client-provided information correctly on specimen labels.
- Ensures all identifiers on received specimens and paperwork match and are labeled correctly.
- Troubleshoots sample issues and contacts clients via phone or email to investigate.
- Operates centrifuge and other laboratory equipment as needed.
- Aliquots specimens according to procedure using proper safety equipment.
- Processes reagents, including documentation, stocking, and labeling.
- Prepares reagents as needed and documents in the reagent log.
- Performs general laboratory cleaning.
- Manages laboratory supplies, including inventory tracking, ordering, and restocking to ensure adequate supply levels.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
- Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.
- Capability to troubleshoot and recognize technical problems as they arise, seeking assistance from the supervisor when controls fail and results are not as expected.
- Willingness to work unscheduled hours and rotate on-call responsibilities as needed.
- Proficiency in using laboratory information systems (LIS) for data entry and specimen processing.
- Experience with operating laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and aliquoting devices.
- Knowledge of proper specimen handling, labeling, and storage procedures.
- Familiarity with reagent preparation and documentation processes.
- Ability to follow safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, or equivalency
Qualifications (Preferred)
- Previous experience in data entry.
- One year laboratory experience.
Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.
- This position involves light work that may exert up to 20 pounds and may consistently require light work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects or lab equipment. Workers in this position may be exposed to the chemicals used in a laboratory setting.
