Job Summary

TRIO Upward Bound (UB) is a federally funded program and one of two TRIO programs at the University of Utah. The UB project serves 95 pre-college students annually with a goal of increasing the number of low-income and first-generation students who enter and graduate from post-secondary institutions of higher education within six years. The UB Program Coordinator will assist the UB Manager in the development and implementation of policies, programs, and financial objectives for the project in accordance with the federal guidelines and regulations determined by the U. S. Department of Education.

The UB Coordinator will oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of advising programs that contribute to the academic advising mission of the institution. Utilizes professional advising and guidance skills to assess diverse needs of students and provide appropriate advice related to academic planning and progress leading to high school graduation and post-secondary enrollment.

Responsibilities

Recruit and assist in the selection of UB participants based on federal requirements.

Provide academic advising, counseling, and coordinate tutoring to UB participants. Programs include weekly tutoring at participating high schools, Saturday educational experiences, and a 6-week summer academy residential program.

Establishes program direction and objectives, prepare and administers the budget, and manages available resources (e.g., money, space, staff, supplies, etc.).

Assesses the needs of students and adjusts the structure of the program to address those needs.

Provides significant input and assists in the formulation of overall UB policies and procedures.

Assists in the selection, supervision, and evaluation of student staff.

Provides advising services to students from different backgrounds by performing the duties of an Academic Advisor.

Develops, monitors, and conducts educational seminars and workshops for students.

Develops and prepares advising materials, such as training manuals, brochures, handouts, general information summaries, and newsletters.

Participates in local and national professional associations by serving on planning committees and presenting at conferences and seminars.

Organize promote and conduct involvement to inform parents on higher education opportunities and financial aid including FAFSA .

Maintain participant records and monitor the academic progress of participants

Other responsibilities as assigned by the UB Manager and Project Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalency) in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency. Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT : 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience. (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience.)
