GENERAL SUMMARY
The UVA Alumni Association’s mission is to build the strongest bond among alumni, and between alumni and the University of Virginia, while representing the independent voice and perspectives of alumni.
The Associate Director (AD) works within the Alumni Programs team of the Association’s Engagement Programs department to facilitate lifelong relationships by connecting alumni to each other and the University through innovative, inclusive programs. The Alumni Programs team produces signature affinity and identity-based offerings in collaboration with alumni leaders and partners across Grounds and is dedicated to serving, advising and empowering a diverse group of alumni volunteers who represent the UVA alumni community.
The AD will serve as the primary resource for the Association’s industry-based engagement offerings and support highly visible signature programs, including but not limited to the annual undergraduate class Reunions program, Black Alumni Weekend, Juntos (Hispanic / Latinx Reunion), Career Development Week, and more. This position works in partnership with the Engagement Programs team members, colleagues across Grounds, and alumni volunteer leaders to develop, plan, and execute a range of offerings for diverse communities.
A successful candidate will have interest and experience in building and strengthening alumni relationships; demonstrated core competencies in event planning, volunteer management, and career or industry-focused programming; and the ability to work on multiple timelines with diverse stakeholders in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to plan and execute a variety of in-person, virtual, and hybrid events to support alumni interests and organizational priorities.
- Organize and steward volunteer alumni leaders, interface with vendors, and oversee event execution.
- Provide support to fellow engagement staff members in executing annual signature Alumni Association events and programs throughout the year. Represent the Alumni Association at these events.
- Serve as a liaison and partner to UVA alumni, enabling their ability to connect with the Alumni Association and the University in meaningful ways.
- Grow the Association’s industry-based Alumni Professional Networks (APN) program, including :
Plan execute two annual industry-based mini-summit events (in person, regional)
Plan execute regular industry-based networking events (virtual and in person)Develop maintain an APN email and social media communication strategy, including communication to existing members, marketing strategies for growing networks, and integration with other Alumni Association and University partner communicationsDevelop APN alumni volunteer leadership structure; serve as primary liaison for alumni volunteersDevelop systems, processes, and program structure for repeatable and sustainable growth of the APN programPartner with Association colleagues to plan execute industry-focused events during signature alumni programs (Reunions, BAW, Juntos, Career Development Week, etc.)Partner with Association colleagues to support industry-focused student engagement programming (Alumni Speaker Series events, etc.)Partner with University Career Center colleagues to support industry-based regional summer reception series for students and alumni; create synergies between student-focused UCC Career Communities and APNsPartner with University Career Center colleagues to expand Association support of Virginia Alumni Mentoring (VAM) program; drive collaboration with other University-wide mentorship effortsPartner with University colleagues on existing / emerging industry-focused pan-University initiatives and programs (UVA Innovates, Public Service Pathways, etc.)EDUCATION & BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required. A degree from the University of Virginia and / or an active knowledge of the University and its mission and traditions is preferred but not requiredEvent planning experience (3-5 years)Volunteer management / volunteer stewardship (3-5 years)Experience working with diverse stakeholders including volunteers, corporate executives and senior leadership, and business professionalsExperience in a career services environment as related to the specific duties and responsibilities outlined aboveExperience monitoring and managing budgetsSKILLS / CERTIFICATIONS / ABILITIES
