JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Editorial Assistant
FT/PT, FLSA Status: Part-time, Non-Exempt, Hourly (15-20 hours/week)
Supervisor: Editor in Chief
Salary Range: $20-$25/hour
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The part-time Editorial Assistant will have a wide range of Communications Department support responsibilities, including daily office administration, customer relations, content curation and archives management, research and newsgathering, as well as opportunities to report and write for our digital platforms and flagship magazine. This role requires a strong combination of accuracy, detail-oriented organizational skills, customer relations and interpersonal skills, writing ability, journalistic instincts, critical-thinking skills and, in all things, professionalism.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Write Class Notes and In Memoriam sections of the magazine—handling central intake, doing additional reporting and fact checking where appropriate, compiling and formatting the entries, reporting and writing special sidebar items for subjects deserving more prominent treatment.
- Handles intake and processing of letters to the editor.
- May write other short items, such as book blurbs or news briefs.
- Assists staffers with research, photo acquisition and fact-checking.
- Assists with magazine production, including prepress proofing.
- Maintains and inputs data into various archives and databases for Communications Department.
- Serves as the Communications Department’s frontline customer service representative, including handling queries and complaints, address changes, and content submissions.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in a publishing environment strongly preferred
- Good working knowledge of the University of Virginia
- Must have proven deadline experience
- Must have proven customer service experience
SKILLS/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office and Adobe software (InDesign, Photoshop). Must be comfortable learning new software and new platforms. Must be comfortable using database software
- Demonstrable newswriting skills, including clips

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Fast-paced hybrid work environment with a minimum of 2 days in the office each week and the remaining days working from home. This job is based in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
