The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 330 full-time faculty members, 460 courtesy faculty members, and over 350 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development. Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. The overall annual operations funding from all sources is over $130 million.

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Continuing Education Coordinator.

The Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute (ADAI) is a multidisciplinary research institute in the University of Washington School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. The Institute’s staff of clinical and social psychologists, epidemiologists, public health experts, and information specialists work to improve our understanding and reduce the harm caused by alcohol and drug use. Our mission is to advance research, policy, and practice in order to improve the lives of individuals and communities affected by alcohol and drug use and addiction.

This position works for ADAI’s Center for Community-Engaged Drug Education, Epidemiology & Research (CEDEER) and leads operational, administrative, and clinical training activities focusing on assisting healthcare organizations with implementing evidence-based integrated behavioral health and substance use programs. The Continuing Education Coordinator works closely with the CEDEER Director and the Assistant Director of Healthcare Implementation and Strategy as well as project managers and clinician trainers on multiple phases of clinical protocol development, curriculum development and delivery of high quality clinical trainings, with activities including planning, development, delivery, maintenance and evaluation of educational activities and materials.

This position juggles multiple responsibilities, requires high attention to detail, works effectively as part of a team, and can prioritize work. This position requires expertise in the clinical management of opioid use disorder with medications in order to design clinical protocols for providers in novel care settings with newly available medications. This position is responsible for collaborating with team members to implement an education and training strategy for a Center that is highly visible to healthcare organizations, policy-makers and healthcare providers throughout the United States and abroad and their interactions will reflect on the UW among this large group of people.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Educational and Training Development and Delivery of Training Activities (80%)

  • Independently lead the development of content and materials for health care provider and healthcare organization trainings in collaboration with the project managers, CEDEER assistant director, and other subject matter experts (e.g. physicians, psychologists, nurses, social workers, substance use disorder professionals, health care administrators, care navigators etc). These protocols will need to take into account federal and state laws and rules related to medication storage, handling, and administration and account for state rules and licensure related to clinical scopes of practice.
  • Lead the development of clinical policies, workflows, and procedures for a sub-acute stabilization center (SASC) with input from physicians, nurses, emergency medical services etc. Review clinical research literature on opioid use disorder medications and new models of care to inform recommendations.
  • Facilitate ongoing continuous process improvement activities and meetings for the SASC with healthcare providers, public health epidemiologists, and UW research team.
  • Actively lead collaboration and coordination with Public Health-Seattle & King County to lead practice innovations to support people with opioid use disorder and prevent opioid overdoses.
  • Participate in regular team meetings.
  • Lead projects, coordinating content creation and delivery using both in-person and technology-enhanced methods, including websites, audio-narrated presentations, web-based simulations in collaboration with team members. Ensure successful project execution with minimal supervision. Develop and help implement strategic planning to create systems change and new models of care delivery.
  • Design and lead ongoing train-the-trainer efforts for health care providers focusing on best practices for pedagogy, content and delivery methods.
  • Develop and maintain clinical training materials, including slides and handouts, and track on various versions, types and locations.
  • Evaluate educational activities including conducting surveys, collating data, performing basic statistics and summarizing qualitative data.

    Education, Training and Technical Assistance Support (20%)

  • Facilitate meetings with healthcare organizations & UW clinical experts to assess their education and training needs. Review medical research literature and state rules and regulations regarding scope of care and licensure to inform all aspects of work.
  • Meet with healthcare organizations to assess, develop and implement training specific to their clinical staffs' education needs for both collaborative care and substance use disorder.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's degree in nursing and a minimum of 3 years of experience in Nursing Education and Public Health, including 2 years of experience in clinical quality improvement, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience delivering health care and substance use disorder services to people with opioid use disorder.
  • Background in working with people with Lived Experience of substance use.
  • Background in working on large healthcare research projects.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, creative problem-solving skills, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and to interact positively with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to prioritize work appropriately and to work effectively both as a team member and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work on several different projects and with several different staff members simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in the use of Office productivity applications such as MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, MS Outlook.
  • Experience in developing and delivering educational and training materials for Opiate Use Disorders.
  • Interest or experience in educational technology, including online learning, learning management systems and/or presentation applications (e.g Zoom).

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in nursing and a minimum of 5 years of experience in Nursing Education and Public Health.
  • Experience working in instructional design, distance/online learning.
  • Interest or experience working in instructional design, distance/online learning.
  • Interest or experience with mental health, SUD/OUD and/or medical care.
  • Proficiency with terminology, SUD/OUD and behavioral health terminology.
  • Experience in an academic setting.
