The Office of Indigenous Engagement has an outstanding opportunity for a Native and Indigenous Student Development Specialist.
The Native and Indigenous Student Development Specialist (NISDS) is responsible for developing, maintaining, and assessing a comprehensive array of recruitment, retention, and advocacy programs appropriate for the University of Washington Tacoma campus. The goal of these programs is Native and Indigenous student success, retention, completion of degrees and their development as engaged citizens and leaders.
The NISDS will work collaboratively with other members of the Indigenous Engagement team as well as various cross-campus teams to support the mission, vision, and values of the Office of Indigenous Engagement and UW Tacoma. The programs developed by the NISDS will enable students to explore their personal, social, and future professional identities, to apply their foundational (community-based) and acquired (classroom) knowledge across curricular and co-curricular contexts, and to cultivate mentoring and coaching relationships with faculty, professional staff, and local community members.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
40% Provide student-centered services that engage Native and Indigenous students’ academic success, career development, identity development, and leadership development.
Develop, facilitate, and evaluate identity-based leadership development programs.
Support student-driven programs and training initiatives that foster learning and engagement about social justice-focused issues related to tribal relations, cross-cultural community building, and other intersecting social identities with the goal of fostering inclusiveness within and across Native and Indigenous student groups and preparing students to lead and thrive in an increasingly diverse and interdependent global society.
Advise and support registered Native and Indigenous student organizations and collaborate with Equity and Inclusion staff to promote cross-cultural learning among registered student organizations on campus.
Utilize enrollment and progression data to monitor and support Native and Indigenous students’ academic progress, ensuring alignment with their major requirements and career goals. Develop innovative methods to analyze and interpret data, identifying key metrics to measure and enhance student success, retention, and completion rates.
Supervise and mentor student employees with special attention to their personal and professional development.
30% The Native and Indigenous Student Development Specialist will have responsibility for collaborative initiatives and programs, to include:
Partner with the Center for Equity and Inclusion (CEI) team, Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) colleagues, Student Transitions and Success, First Gen Fellows, Pack Advisors, the Teaching and Learning Center, Undergraduate Education and other faculty and staff who lead Student Success initiatives at UWT, implement innovative program offerings such as welcome programs, alumni-student interfaces, history/heritage month events, and year-end celebrations.
Work closely with the Equity and Inclusion team to enhance opportunities for all students to explore issues of equity and diversity and to increase student success and retention at UW Tacoma, in alignment with the mission, vision, and goals of the Office of Equity and Inclusion and UW Tacoma.
Participate in campus committees, working groups, and boards relevant to the work of the NISDS, CEI, and OEI.
Work closely with established boards, committees, and others to garner input and receive feedback on the priorities, focus, and effectiveness of diversity and equity programs and services.
Maintain a flexible work schedule in alignment with office priorities, including regular office hours and occasional evening and weekend work.
20% The Native and Indigenous Student Development Specialist will have the following assessment, reporting, and strategic planning responsibilities:
Lead assessment and evaluation activities within the Native and Indigenous Student Development Specialist’s portfolio and provide support for ongoing assessment efforts for the Office of Indigenous Engagement.
Maintain a detailed program budget and spending plan that covers estimated costs of the program and tracks expenditures in a timely manner.
Prepare manuals, reports, grant proposals and other documents to further program goals and document efforts and achievements, as requested by the Tribal Liaison of the Office of Indigenous Engagement.
10% The Native and Indigenous Student Development Specialist will work with the Center for American Indian and Indigenous Studies on Mellon Grant deliverables including:
Host monthly Native Family lunches.
Develop and lead Native programming throughout the year.
Plan and co-lead a Summer Institute in Indigenous Humanities (biennial).
Develop and co-lead a Native graduate / faculty mentorship program.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Education, American Indian Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Social Justice, Social Work or a related field.
3 years of direct experience working with college access and student success programs, such as TRiO, retention projects, leadership development initiatives, service-learning initiatives, mentoring programs, or similar experience with tribal communities.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing programs that promote Native and Indigenous student learning and engagement.
