SALARY
The base salary range for this position will be $130,000-$140,000 a year, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

This position will be based at Harborview Medical Center.
This position is without tenure due to funding and is a multi-year appointment with a 12-month service (July 1-June 30). Anticipated start date is July 1, 2025. This is a 1.0 FTE full time position; 0.8 FTE will be direct clinical patient care and 0.2 FTE is allotted to administrative work, specifically providing guidance and oversight for the triage team (including nurses, technicians, medical assistants, and scheduling staff) and developing and training the staff in triage protocols.
Teaching Associates are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.
The Rapid Patient Access (Triage) Optometrist will assist UW Eye Institute staff in assessing the nature and urgency of vision- and eye-related complaints and symptoms that are directed to the Triage section of the Eye Institute. The RPA optometrist will discuss complaints and symptoms directly with patients and examine patients in an urgent/emergent timeframe as warranted, to determine the nature and severity of vision problems or eye disease in a triage clinic setting. The RPA optometrist will perform complete eye examinations and obtain necessary testing as warranted and will consult with and refer patients to ophthalmologists in the University of Washington Department of Ophthalmology as prudent or necessary. The RPA optometrist will have oversight by an attending ophthalmologist in the department and will provide appropriate patient care under the department’s approved Optometry Standard Operating Procedures protocols.
The Rapid Patient Access (Triage) Optometrist will also participate in the teaching mission of the Department of Ophthalmology and will be directly responsible for the education of nurses, medical assistants, and technicians, and will work with ophthalmology residents and ophthalmic subspecialty fellows.
REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must hold an OD degree or equivalent and have a minimum of two years of experience as an optometrist. Experience in working with an ophthalmology team and managing patients with ophthalmic disease is desirable.
Applicants must be eligible for licensure in the State of Washington.
In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S,) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
