Job Summary:
The Academic Advisor will work with students to facilitate successful and timely degree completion by monitoring student progress and providing information regarding curriculum policies, procedures, and guidelines for the degree programs that are advised. The advisor will also identify students who are experiencing academic difficulty and develop strategies for success in partnership with the student. The advisor is responsible for assisting students with reviewing degree plans, course registration, maintaining advising records, and other duties related to student success.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree in an appropriate area of specialization.

Position Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two (2) years of appropriate experience:
1) A learning-centered approach to advising
2) Excellent written and verbal communication skills
3) Flexibility in the use of media to communicate with students and faculty (i.e., email, telephone, Skype or other similar program, Facebook, etc.)
4) Ability to document student interactions accurately and efficiently in adopted software programs.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization, including but not limited to:
1) Experience advising students in a university setting
2) Knowledge of academic programs offered on campus
3) Proficiency in advising software programs such as Degree Works, SSC Campus, Banner or other similar programs

Essential Functions / Job Duties:
  • 80% - With minimal supervision, this employee: 1) Uses a learning-centered approach to advising that enhances students’ decision-making skills and contributes to the development of their intellectual and personal growth. 2) Exhibits knowledge and provides students with resources, support, and opportunities available to make informed decisions, enhance their educational experience, and promote student success. 3) Provides students with accurate information information on program requirements and institutional/departmental policies and procedures. 4) Encourages students to participate in learning opportunities outside of the classroom setting. 5) Develops realistic educational plans that meet the needs, goals, and interests of individual students. 6) Documents accurately and efficiently all interactions with students and their progress toward meeting educational, professional, and personal goals using appropriate software programs. 7) Uses multiple forms of media to communicate with students (email, telephone, fax, and video). 8) Demonstrates efficient and effective use of technology whenever ncessary. 9) Exhibits excellent written and oral communication skills. 10) Maintains confidentiality and complies with FERPA guidelines at all times. 11) Develops structured feedback for students by using university technology platforms (Banner, Degree Works, Tableau, etc.). - (Essential)
  • 10% - Communicates and collaborates with students, faculty, and staff, both from the Emerald Coast and Pensacola Campuses. Also participates in advising-related training and stays up-to-date on changes in university policy relating to student services. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Collaborates on special projects as needed, program-reporting tasks, and participates in specific business processes. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Seeks development through both on-campus and off-campus workshops, training sessions, and/or professional organizations in support of the mission and goals of the university. - (Essential)

  • Physical Requirements: Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely results would be cuts, bruises, etc.
