Job Summary

The Locksmith-Intermediate position is housed in the University Police Access Control Department. This position will coordinate projects and work orders with the Access Control Manager and maintain vital relationships with on-campus partners such as UPD Facilities, Housing and Residence Life, Auxiliary Services, Planning & Construction Services, and ITS. This position must be available as needed for on-call duty on a bi-weekly schedule to work nights or weekends to service the emergency needs of our customers. They will respond to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

Responsibilities

1 -
Maintain and repair door hardware, which includes mechanical or electronic locks and closures; change locks when keys are lost; re-key offices, floors, or buildings as needed; issue new keys as needed; operate key cutting machines, cut keys by code, with code sets, or on combinations; adjust/maintain key machines; repair safes and/or safe locking systems; repair electronic SAM boxes as needed; maintain and repair low-voltage access control hardware. Identify problems, determine possible solutions, and actively work to resolve the issues. Follow instructions through a standard work process and check work for accuracy before completion of tasks. Prepare and maintain accurate records; maintain service history for work orders. Adapt to changing work priorities; communicate with diverse groups; meet deadlines and schedules; work as part of a team; work with constant interruptions; display mechanical aptitude.

Regularly uses intermediate computer technology skills, including word processing software, spreadsheet software, inputting and retrieving data accurately from database software, electronic mail programs, digital calendars, and digital filing systems, in order to meet the administrative needs of this position. Utilizes AssetWorks AimFlowPath work order system to record time worked on a regular basis and ensures that accurate records of keys, codes, and buildings are maintained in BEST Keystone software. Relays messages through verbal/written means in a clear and effective manner; listens to others. Performs work in the least disruptive manner possible to customers. Demonstrates courteous actions and follows the organization's established protocol for customer service.

Perform regular tasks such as maintaining tools and equipment. Recognize and obtain required tools, equipment, materials, and supplies needed to do the job. Maintain proper stock, parts, tools, and safety equipment in the assigned storage areas. Work with others to keep vehicles and employee work areas clean and orderly. Recognize and follow prescribed safety procedures and regulations while following all NFPA and ADA codes and regulations; comply with OSHA/EPA regulations. Perform all work, including handling hazardous materials, in accordance with established safety procedures. Assist in ensuring a safe working environment throughout the facility for all employees. Report all accidents and injuries in a timely manner. Participate in regular safety meetings, safety training, and hazard assessments.

Participates in bi-weekly on-call duty with the Senior Locksmith. The on-call locksmith must be available to respond to emergencies involving life safety or building security on campus in one hour or less. Works alone or with a team to complete special assignments related to providing services at special events or other tasks as assigned by the Access Control Manager. Participates in department-provided training and learning opportunities to develop work-related skills and abilities. Completes all required training on a timely basis.

Required Qualifications

Required Education
High School / GED

Required Experience
Minimum of High School Diploma or GED. Three (3) years of experience as a locksmith or recent locksmith experience combined with work in a related field (maintenance, electrical, carpentry, construction) totaling three (3) years, or a combination of vocational trades training and field experience as a locksmith or in a related field totaling three (3) years. Must have at least 40 hours of professional-level locksmith training and have passed the basic certification exam. Must be available for on-call status, adjust work hours, and be available as needed to work nights or weekends to service the emergency needs of our customers or campus special events. A valid driver's license is required. Due to the nature of this position, the qualified applicant will undergo an intensive background check and security clearance by the University Police Department.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience
Five (5) years or more experience in a lockshop or directly related trade in a university, health care, or school maintenance department. Experience repairing and maintaining low-voltage electrical systems.

Proposed Salary

$19.61 - $26.25 Hourly. Paid on a Bi-Weekly Basis.

ABILITIES
Must be able to follow instructions and coordinate the activities of trade workers and/or service workers. Performs routine tasks individually or in a team setting; adapts to changing work priorities. Able to follow the organization's established protocol for customer service; must be able to adjust work hours as conditions may dictate, work nights, weekends, and service the emergency needs of the university and/or special events. Must have the ability to effectively communicate through verbal and written formats; listen to others and understand their needs; establish and maintain productive and collaborative professional working relationships. Respond to questions within policy and procedure guidelines. Preparing and maintaining accurate records.


KNOWLEDGE

Must have the ability to understand the concept of locks, keying, electronic access control, and door hardware operation. Must have sufficient knowledge of the locksmithing trade to monitor work in progress and inspect work to ensure it meets quality requirements and specifications. Proficient in reading and understanding technical drawings and written work instructions. Proficient in understanding and complying with safety regulations and handling hazardous materials in the performance of job duties (i.e., OSHA and EPA).

SKILLS
Must be skilled in performing technical tasks, detail-oriented, and able to adapt to the changing needs of the business. Must have intermediate skills for occasional use of computer technology, including word processing software, spreadsheet software, inputting and retrieving data accurately from database software, electronic mail programs, digital calendars, and digital filing systems in order to meet the administrative needs of this position.

Hazards - Include a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current or exposure to chemicals. Lifting ¿ up to 20lbs or greater Outdoor Environment - Work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions.
