Position Summary
The Counselor, Underserved Populations Coordinator will function as a strong generalist conducting mental health assessments (intakes), urgent care (crisis) assessments, triage assessments and professional counseling services (including individual, couples, group) especially but not exclusively to students from populations who are less likely to access counseling services (underserved populations). Other responsibilities include referral, consultation, in-service training, and outreach, as well as crisis intervention services and public relations services to campus and community members as appropriate.

The Counselor, Underserved Populations Coordinator is under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of the Counseling & Testing Center (CTC) with a secondary supervisory relationship with the Vice Chancellor for Access, Belonging & Compliance (ABC). Other responsibilities include developing and fostering relationships with departments that serve underserved populations, as well as belonging focused student organizations and groups; developing procedures with ABC campus partners to better respond to student mental health needs; providing consultation, outreach, and training to ABC offices/staff. This position will have a primary office within CTC and a secondary location within a partnered ABC office. The Counselor will also participate in staff, student affairs, and university committees. Similar to all staff at the CTC, the successful candidate will work to make UWL a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, and they will do so in compliance with ethical, legal, and accreditation guidelines.

This position is full-time between August and May, and part-time (0.5 FTE or 20 hours per week) in June and July, with primarily counseling treatment services being provided in summers.

Required Qualifications
  • Independently licensed in Wisconsin as a Psychologist, LPC, LCSW, or LMFT, or independently licensed in another state and eligible to apply for a WI license by reciprocity immediately upon hire.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience as a licensed mental health professional (if licensed as LPC) or possesses the equivalent necessary to provide clinical supervision toward state licensure for counselors in training.
  • Experience with treating diagnostically and/or culturally diverse client populations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) from an APA-accredited psychology program and licensed as a psychologist.
  • Experience providing mental health treatment on a college campus and/or experience working in higher education with culturally and diagnostically diverse college students.
  • Experience conducting brief therapy with emerging adults for a wide range of presenting concerns.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision to trainees in a counseling setting.
  • Experience conducting outreach programming, presentations, training, and/or workshops relevant to college students from underserved populations.
  • Experience providing group counseling (psychoeducational/skills, support, and therapy groups).
  • Experience with crisis intervention treatment.
  • Ability to provide bi-lingual treatment (Spanish and/or Hmong language preferred).
  • Ability to work autonomously and within interdisciplinary team settings.
  • Experience with Electronic Health Records and computer applications used for telehealth services.

Working conditions and environment
  • Typical office hours (7:45am-4:30pm). Evening hours may be required as we expand our services (e.g., one evening/week), with a schedule adjustment made to maintain an average of 40 hours per week onsite. While no after-hours crisis coverage is required, our clinical staff members occasionally provide evening outreach programming and may be called in for a campus crisis response.
  • Clinicians provide a combination of in-person and telehealth counseling services.
