What are the responsibilities and job description for the Facilities Technician position at University of Wisconsin Madison?
The UW-Madison Arboretum is a complex research center of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. It is also a managed urban natural area and a popular public destination with multiple mission focus areas, heavy visitor and recreational use, youth and adult education programs, volunteer and outreach engagement, and robust public and private events programs. The mission of the Arboretum is to conserve and restore Arboretum lands, advance restoration ecology, and foster the land ethic.
The Arboretum Facilities Technician serves under the general direction of the Associate Director and performs a variety of maintenance, custodial and set up tasks required in the routine cleaning, maintenance and operation of all Arboretum buildings. In addition, the Facilities Technician works closely with the Land Care Manager to assist with special projects related to Arboretum outbuildings. The Facilities Technician submits and tracks work orders for repairs to Arboretum facilities and serves as the main point of contact for work crews performing work at Arboretum outbuilding facilities. The Facilities Technician works closely with the Visitor Center Manager and the Custodian to perform room preparation for both internal and external events at the Arboretum Visitor Center.
- 50% Utilizes basic equipment to repair and maintain basic machinery, equipment, and facility property under close supervision to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation
- 5% Assists with routine facility inspections and monitors cleanliness
- 5% Escalates and documents issues according to established policies and procedures
- 5% Assists with inventory and distribution of deliveries to appropriate entities under close supervision
- 5% Assists trades, crafts, vendors, and technical staff with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed
- 10% Sets up and tears down equipment for institutional meetings and events
- 20% Utilizes basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables

Required
H.S. Diploma
Required:
- 3 years of custodial and/or facilities maintenance experience
- Knowledge of institutional or commercial cleaning methods, techniques, supplies and equipment
- Knowledge of basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, etc. and ability to carry out related tasks
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to maintain flexibility in a dynamic setting, work independently and have a strong teamwork focus
Preferred:
- Ability to troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance and repairs of small engines, vehicles and equipment
- Experience conducting efficient room set-ups and changeovers for events and meetings
- Experience submitting and tracking maintenance and repair requests through a work order system
- Experience managing the cleaning and maintenance of multiple facilities
The expected work schedule is 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a 30-minute unpaid meal break.
This position may occasionally be asked to work hours beyond the normal work schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime to provide coverage in the event of emergencies, special events, and/or special projects.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
