What are the responsibilities and job description for the Language Programs Office Academic Coordinator-SEASSI position at University of Wisconsin Madison?
The Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) is a national, eight-week intensive language institute that uses communicative and proficiency-based methodology as well as the team-teaching approach for instruction in up to nine Southeast Asian languages annually from mid-June through mid-August. The 2025 SEASSI program will be held from June 16 through August 8 and will be preceded by a staff orientation week from June 9-13, 2025. SEASSI is a part of the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes (WISLI), which is housed in the Language Program Office (LPO) at UW-Madison.
This position will work with the leadership of the Language Program Office (Director, Academic Director, and Associate Director), other LPO Academic Coordinator(s), and other LPO staff to support program activities and ensure programs are meeting language proficiency outcomes. This position will be expected to independently resolve day-to-day student and instructor academic and non-academic concerns that may arise, and work in consultation with LPO/Program leadership for major concerns. In addition, this position will advise on training for all WISLI Instructors. The main focus of this position will be supporting the students and instructors of the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI). This position may assist with other programs that are a part of the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes (WISLI) as needed.
This position is for Summer 2025, from June 9-August 8. The selected candidate will be expected to work in-person, for the duration of the summer term.
- 45% Leads the development and implementation of academic program initiatives
- 5% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
- 5% Serves as the liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups to identify and maintain academic program-related partnerships
- 5% Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and academic program objectives
- 10% Evaluates existing academic program strategy and makes recommendations to unit leadership for program enhancement
- 5% Assists stakeholders with preparing and/or maintaining documentation, financial management, and/or reporting requirements related to sponsored grants, contracts, or agreements
- 15% Provides full service advising resources and services, provides information about educational options and academic requirements, and communicates directly with students regarding all aspects of the advising process
- 5% Manages degree programs and/or certificates, high impact practice programming and events, and curriculum development and implementation
- 5% Lead faculty meetings and student/faculty orientations, assist with SEASSI event preparations, and help facilitate co-curricular events

Required
Master's Degree
Minimum of Master's degree required, PhD preferred, with specialization in Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Education, Southeast Asian Studies, or a related field.
Qualifications: At least three years of language teaching experience Southeast Asian Language, 5 years preferred
Excellent organizational and project management skills
Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information with excellent professional judgment
Superior professional English writing skills
Computer proficiency, experience working with learning management systems and language-learning technologies
Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with diverse groups of stakeholders such as faculty, instructional staff, administrative staff, students, external visitors, and grant sponsors.
Preferred experience in language program coordination or administration
Full Time: 100%
It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
Terminal, 2 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding
Minimum $65,000 SUMMER SESSION

Short term summer staff with no presumption of reappointment. Position will run from June 9-August 8, 2025.
