What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pathogen Surveillance Education Program Manager position at University of Wisconsin Madison?
The successful candidate will initially develop and implement three separate programs:
1. A semester long course to teach honors undergraduate students about environmental pathogen surveillance
2. Develop a small summer research program for undergraduate students. This includes helping students find summer research labs and then developing and implementing the wrap around programming
3. Develop a small 2-week program to teach non-specialists about environmental pathogen surveillance
They will also be required to obtain necessary administrative and biosafety approvals for holding the courses and associated programs and activities.
This person will also have the opportunity to share course materials with other institutions and publish any learnings, as appropriate.
These programs will be developed and implemented with guidance and help from David and Shelby O'Connor. This person may also have opportunities to develop other public facing materials to share research from ongoing pathogen surveillance projects between the O'Connor labs and the community.
- 20% Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within that discipline
- 5% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
- 20% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs
- 15% Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
- 5% Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
- 5% May administer budget and personnel for instructional grants and programs
- 10% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
- 20% Organizes and directs a summer research program for university students

Required
PhD in molecular biology, virology, genetics, or a related field
Specific qualifications:
1. At least two years leading courses for undergraduate students
2. Successfully developed at least one semester-long course
3. Directly managed undergraduate researchers
4. Direct experience sequencing viral or bacterial pathogens, either in a research or educational setting
5. Experience working with bioinformatics either in a research or educational setting

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
