Job Summary:

This role supports Precollege programming in the Division of Continuing Studies (DCS) through instruction of a one-week course at the elementary school precollege program, Growing Early Minds. An instructor's main role in the program will be to plan and teach their course during the daily instructional block between the hours of 8:30 am and 12:00 am from June 16-20, 2025. Instructors are assigned a class of up to 12 students. Instructors are responsible for developing or modifying a course featuring 12.5 hours of in person instruction designed to provide high quality, fast-paced learning for elementary aged students. There are 3 positions to be filled for this role; Badger Precollege offers a variety of programs over the summer and candidates may be considered for multiple positions if their backgrounds and interests align with multiple courses. Specific course titles which have open positions are listed below under "Course Titles".
Course Titles and descriptions:

Artful Architecture:
Join us for an exciting journey into the world of architecture! This course combines drawing and mathematics to help students visualize and create their own dream buildings. Through hands-on and engaging activities, this class will go through the entire planning and designing process: site plan, floor plan, section, and elevation. There will be a focus on different architectural styles, both local and regional. At the end of the course, the designs will be brought to life for all to explore during our Family Visiting Day.

Gross Biology:
Prepare to be amazed, astonished, and maybe even a little grossed out in Gross Biology! Here you?ll go on a mind-boggling quest to uncover the squirmy, slimy, creepy, crawly, and downright bizarre features of the natural world. You?ll be intrigued by parasites, mucus, bacteria, and more! Put on a brave face, and maybe some gloves, as you complete hands-on experiments to uncover the purpose of some of nature?s oddities. By the end of class, you?ll challenge your perceptions of what it really means to be gross.

Problems and Puzzlers:
Get ready to bend your brain and twist your mind! In this course, you?ll discover the thrill of solving puzzles, cracking codes, and solving logic challenges. Through a variety of hands-on activities, games, and teamwork, we?ll explore real-world problems and develop creative strategies to solve them. From puzzles to brain teasers, you'll sharpen your critical thinking skills while having a blast with your fellow classmates. Just watch as your confidence and problem-solving skills grow!

Responsibilities:

Develops and instructs non-credit course sessions on a specific topic or within an area of expertise to provide continuing education opportunities to the institution and affiliated community.
  • 50% Instructs continuing education classroom activities and guides learning to align with existing curriculum
  • 20% Measures student performance and progress, utilizing assessment tools to align with established mission and philosophy
  • 15% Researches and selects curriculum content, designs courses, and prepares assessment tools regarding specific programs to align with unit objectives and strategy
  • 10% Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to identify learning barriers and difficulties, develops solutions and aligns resources with student needs to support learner advancement academically
  • 5% Serves as a subject matter expert and communicates with program affiliates, students, and stakeholders providing information and answering questions based on curriculum materials and standards

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in Education or content related field in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • 2 years of teaching experience with K-8 students preferred. Student teaching experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver engaging content to elementary school students is preferred.
  • Energetic approach to learning
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well with students, administration, and support staff
  • Experience meeting the needs of all students
  • Respect for individual differences and individuality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise or Master teacher designation in a specific intellectual or talent area

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding

Salary:

$850- $2050 LUMP SUM

Additional Information:

  • Develop (or modify) a course featuring 12.5 hours of class activities designed to provide high quality, fast-paced learning for elementary aged students. Instructors may have the option to teach multiple sessions and/or courses.
- Complete all hiring requirements and trainings as required by Human Resources at UW Madison.- Participate in staff orientation before the program begins.
  • Teach class(es) during Badger Precollege GEM (Growing Early Minds) Program. Program Dates:
June 16-20, 2025. Instructional block: 8:30 am-12:00 am M-F.
  • Attend 1 instructor check-in meeting with program administrators per week of employ.
  • Complete post program student evaluation materials and submit final syllabus as scheduled by administrative staff.
