What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Technician position at University of Wisconsin Madison?
The Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care, is seeking a candidate who will assist with asthma research in the Samarasinghe laboratory. Asthma is a common complex syndrome of the airways that we mimic in laboratory animals so that we can study the impact of respiratory infections on asthma. The Samarasinghe laboratory focuses on delineating mechanisms of lung immune responses during fungal, viral, and bacterial infections. Understanding the immune mechanisms at play during these infectious diseases leads to opportunities to develop novel therapeutics.
Our research program is multidisciplinary involving specialized techniques in allergy immunology, virology and microbiology. The Research Technician should expect to execute routine and complex research experiments, including but not limited to the following procedures: mouse models of asthma, influenza, and bacterial pneumonia, maintenance cell lines, preparation of primary cell cultures from mouse, prepare samples for flow cytometric analyses and microscopic techniques, perform pathogen load quantifications, and maintain detailed laboratory records
- 20% Prepares lab and/or field test materials and samples according to established research requirements and specifications. Performs lab or field tests.
- 15% Inspects and maintains equipment, supplies, inventory, and facility spaces
- 50% Collects data and monitors test results according to established research requirements and specifications
- 5% May assist with literature reviews and/or report writing
- 10% Reviews data to summarize results for presentations or reporting

The starting salary for the position is $21.50/hr but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. This position will be heavily involved in collaborative science as such, the ideal candidate must be able to time and project manage efficiently, work with multiple other groups effectively, and meet deadlines. In addition, they will have an interest and willingness to work with animal models of human disease.
