Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising, the position of Manager of Advisor Training, Development & Assessment (Manager) will lead the campus-level onboarding and training for new advisors and participate in candidate search and reviews for advisor hiring for new and replacement advisor positions. In addition, the Manager will develop ongoing and ad hoc training for current staff related to advising practices and student-centric approaches in higher education. The manager will manage and track campus funds for professional development for current advisors and identify no- and low-cost training or professional opportunities to maximize value for UWM’s advisors and their student advisees. With the Director, develop assessments of advising programmatic and student learning outcomes.
The Manager will also develop and manage opportunities for mentoring and job shadowing within UWM’s distributed advising landscape. The Manager will participate in campus-wide programming and projects related to advising, particularly with an eye towards training and communicating with campus advisors and success coaches.

Position Responsibilities:
- Develop, manage, and deliver standard onboarding activities for all new campus advisors, including maintaining and enhancing the Advisor Onboard Canvas site. Collaborate on advisor training schedules and content with advising unit leaders who train advisors in School/College/Unit-specific procedures.
- Participate in school, college, or unit search and screens for advisor positions.
- Develop ongoing and ad hoc training for current staff related to advising practices, with an emphasis on holistic, proactive, appreciative, and student-centric approaches in the profession.
- Manage and track campus funds for professional development for current advisors, in balance with School/College-funded opportunities.
- Assist with the development of institution-wide advising assessment metrics, including both process/delivery and student learning outcomes. Monitor those metrics for patterns, trends, or opportunities for training and enhancement of advising services.
- Identify no- and low-cost training or professional development opportunities for campus advisors, focusing on “train-the-trainer"-style programming that can build campus expertise.
- Act as an advising liaison to curricular area courses that focus on college skill-building (such as Educational Psychology 101 & 110, or other new freshman seminar courses) to connect instructors and coursework with advising practices and strategies.
- Act as a liaison to UWM’s Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning for coordination of instructional training with advisor training and awareness of best practices in pedagogy and student learning.
- Develop and manage an informal or formal job shadowing program for campus advisors, which may branch outside of the academic advising structure.
- Develop and manage a mentoring program linking experienced advisors with those new to the role or the profession.
- Temporary seasonal or ad hoc supplemental advising where need arises (e.g., 60 auditors, non-degree students, etc.).
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher
- At least 3 years of experience in academic advising or student services supporting a diverse student population
- Experience in leading or developing professional development, training, and/or onboarding programming
- Demonstrated experiences working with populations that have been historically underrepresented (e.g., first generation, Pell-eligible students, etc.) in educational settings
- Experience in a public, academic environment working with a diverse student, faculty/teacher and staff population
- Demonstrated experience building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with community stakeholders within a diverse community
- Experience with policy development and process design
- Demonstrated professional experience needed to understand, convey, advance, and demonstrate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in performance of responsibilities and amongst their team
- Experience working with technology, including Navigate 360, to improve efficiency and delivery of goals
