The University of Wyoming seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor and Veterinary Parasitologist
The Position: Expertise in veterinary parasitology is vital to supporting the health of Wyoming domestic animals and wildlife. In particular, parasitic diseases are important in the livestock industry.
Responsibilities:
- Through veterinary diagnostics, teaching, and research: promote the control of animal parasitic diseases, and generate/disseminate new knowledge and solutions that impact animal health in Wyoming and more broadly.
- Supervise the activities of the diagnostic parasitology section within the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory (WSVL).
- Supervise and train staff and students involved in diagnostic activities.
- Contribute to ongoing improvements in diagnostic quality control and tests offered.
- Contribute to building the safety and compliance culture within the department.
- Teach one 4-credit 4000/5000 level class in parasitology annually.
- Contribute to other teaching activities in the College through guest lectures.
- Commensurate with the job description, engage in parasitology research relevant to the region.
- As necessary, support other activities within the WSVL. Contribute to shared governance within the Department and UW through service activities.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with colleagues, staff, students, and clients.
- Expertise in an area of veterinary parasitology.
- Demonstrated capacity to engage in interdisciplinary research and diagnostic collaborations.
- Knowledge of biosafety protocols and regulatory standards relevant to veterinary diagnostic laboratories, contributing to a culture of safety and compliance.
- Ability to design and deliver effective educational content for parasitology and related courses, with a commitment to student learning and engagement.
Qualifications:
- Either a DVM or a PhD (or equivalent degrees).
- Research or veterinary diagnostic laboratory experience.
- Demonstrable interest in veterinary parasitology.
About the Department of Veterinary Sciences and the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory:
Mission The departmental Mission is centered on One Health. We provide quality animal disease diagnostic services; conduct research that impacts animal and human disease; and deliver instruction with experiential learning for students, veterinarians, and citizens of Wyoming, Rocky Mountain West and beyond.
Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory (WSVL) The WSVL serves stakeholders in the state and region by providing animal diagnostic services for livestock, companion animals, and wildlife species. Case load is about 24,000/year across all laboratory sections. The laboratory is fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians.
Research Faculty research in the department is centered on infectious diseases, especially those that are transmissible between wildlife and livestock. WSVL has ongoing research projects in chronic wasting disease, Bighorn sheep pneumonia, brucellosis, Q-fever, coccidiosis, canine dysautonomia, and autoimmune diseases.
Students Departmental faculty teach classes in the Animal and Veterinary Sciences (graduate and undergraduate) and Microbiology (undergraduate) degree programs. We support student success by running a pre-veterinary student mentoring program and advising the pre-veterinary student club.
