JOB TITLE:
Database Developer - Wyoming Natural Diversity Database
JOB PURPOSE:
Responsible for managing, optimizing, and enhancing the functionality of the department’s central database. This includes developing procedures, workflows, and automation to improve database performance and ensure efficient interactions for both internal and external stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design, test, and implement updates to database structures, procedures, and functions. Develop and enhance automation for recurring database tasks, streamline deployment workflows to improve operational efficiency.
Establish and maintain database standards through documented workflows to ensure the quality, reliability, and consistency of data services. Manage quality control mechanisms, such as triggers and constraints, to maintain data integrity.
Assess and address database security, privacy, and integrity concerns. Develop and implement testing protocols to ensure compliance with established security and data management standards.
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve database errors, performance bottlenecks, and related issues in a timely and efficient manner.
Research, identify, and recommend emerging database technologies to improve performance, scalability, and system capabilities.
Support the generation and management of external funding opportunities, as needed.
Collaborate with team members on database tasks and data services. Manage and maintain cloud-based database servers, including provisioning, deployment, and routine maintenance.
Actively contribute to departmental processes, management routines, and team meetings to align database operations with organizational goals.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
Evaluate and recommend resources, technologies, or process improvements to enhance systems, equipment, or personnel capabilities. Stay informed of emerging trends and advancements in database technology.
Participate in special projects and initiatives as assigned, supporting departmental goals and priorities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
EXPERIENCE:
3 years work-related experience
LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the
University Vehicle Use Policy

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
2-5 years of professional experience in database development
Experience developing ETL pipelines for production databases
Utility with general-purpose scripting languages such as Python
Experience with PostgreSQL/ PostGIS
Familiarity with working within Agile framework
Experience using and managing biological data
Experience with tools for database versioning and tools for source control
Familiarity with open-source software and technology
Experience with geospatial data including desktop GIS software, geodatabase, and technology for publishing web mapping services
Experience with Bitbucket/GitHub or other code repositories
