JOB TITLE :
Research Associate I - Veterinary Science
JOB PURPOSE :
The selected candidate will assist with our studies in testing and developing vaccines and therapeutics for rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes.
Some immunology and microbiology experience is desired to test our recombinant vaccines in murine challenge studies. Microbiology experience is preferred for maintenance of attenuated bacterial strains; hence, this work includes both in vitro and in vivo testing. Some flow cytometry skills and small animal experience are desired.
A number different vaccination methods will be used including intranasal, oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular immunizations. The applicant will be trained for execution of appropriate immunological methodologies for antigen-specific T cell responses. These include cytokine and antibody response determinations by ELISPOT, ELISA, and flow cytometry methods.
In addition, scoring of diseased states will be required, which may involve salivary flow measurements, blood glucose levels, and conditions scores.
This position is grant funded and considered at-will employment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- The work involves culturing of pure bacterial strains, preparing cultures for vaccination or inactivation.
- Experiments are performed in laboratory mice. The candidate must become competent in various animal techniques in oral, nasal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intraperitoneal delivery methods. The candidate must become competent in regularly bleeding mice and collection of saliva.
- Must have aseptic technique in harvesting lymphoid or organ tissues from humanely euthanized mice. Sterile tissue culture work will be required.
- Competency in inducing autoimmune challenges to mimic rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis-like diseases in mice.
- Competency in performing laboratory assays, e.g., flow cytometry, antibody ELISAs, cytokine ELISAs.

WORK LOCATION : This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States, as sponsorship for work authorization or work visas is not available for this position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education : Bachelor's degree in a field related to research project
Experience : 1 year work-related experience
Other : Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy .
