Role Description

Introduction

The role will be held within the University’s interdisciplinary School of Arts and Creative Technologies (ACT). The School of ACT was established in 2022, and is a highly innovative unit which brings together research, teaching and commercial activities in the fields of interactive media, music, sound recording, film, television, theatre and the business of the creative industries.

Our music element provides a number of technical courses and high-specification facilities. We have two well specified music venues, the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall and Rymer Auditorium and five music recording studios with analog and digital recording equipment.

We also have a large collection of recording equipment, instruments and microphones.

A motivated and enthusiastic person is needed to help provide technical support and maintenance in our facilities. You will be working closely with students, academic staff and external artists, and will be able to offer support in a number of different fields.

The ideal candidate will have experience with event technologies such as mixing desks, PA equipment, lighting, video, audio recording and editing systems, PC and Mac-based audio visual software, hardware and networks. We are looking for a proactive and supportive colleague with a proven track record for good, all round technical knowledge, and excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Role

To provide technical support for a range of diverse audio visual / live event / IT systems and equipment; to provide a specialised service in support of student courses, performances, research projects and events using a wide range of presentational technology and theatre systems. To provide occasional computing support across the School and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities as required.

Skills, Experience & Qualification Needed

  • Degree in Music Technology or Electronic Engineering with Music Technology, or equivalent experience
  • Formal qualification or equivalent experience in video or audio recording, editing and post-production
  • Familiarity with staff notation to a Grade 5 or above standard would be desirable
  • Knowledge of recording techniques, microphones, DAWs, audio and video editing
  • Knowledge of recording studio equipment maintenance, calibration and installation
  • Detailed knowledge in the use and troubleshooting of audio production software and equipment in a modern music studio e.g. Reaper, Ableton Live, microphones, mixing desks and audio interfaces.
  • Technical knowledge of the installation and repair of professional audio production equipment
  • Knowledge of basic safety regulations and procedures for example COSHH, recording studio and live event Health and Safety
  • Able to use, explain and troubleshoot professional video and audio production system
  • Maintenance and repair of professional video or audio production equipment
  • Ability to operate professional audio visual equipment
  • Practical experience gained within a studio and live sound environment
  • Experience of live event production including audio engineering, video streaming and multi-channel recording.
  • Experience of providing technical support in a complex recording studio environment.
  • Troubleshooting and supporting PC and Mac systems
