What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cheer Coach position at University Preparatory Academy?
Purpose: The UPA Assistant Cheer Coach is responsible for working with the Head Coach to coach student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for events or competition. The Assistant Cheer Coach motivates student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport and gives students a well rounded education as a student athlete.
Essential Duties
- Works with cheerleaders during practices and meets.
- Assists the Head Cheer Coach in ongoing assessments of athlete skills and assigning team positions.
- Coaches and instructs cheerleaders, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
- Observes cheerleaders, during events and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and always provides proper supervision of students.
- Assists in developing routines for both sideline and competitive cheer; is a year round cheer program.
- Follows established procedures in the event of an injury.
- Follows state, regional, and district regulations governing the program.
- Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards cheerleaders, officials, and spectators.
- Acts as a team representative and promotes cheerleading by communicating with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations as directed and approved by the Athletic Director or Executive Director.
- Follows established procedures for supplies and uniforms.
- Works with the Head Coach and Athletic Director to develop a policy for awards and submits a list of award winners at the end of the season.
- Participates in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep rallies.
- Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, Executive Director, Athletic Director, or designee.
Qualities of an Excellent Assistant Cheer Coach
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
- Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills,
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain communication skills with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, and Students via phone, email, and text.
- Be organized.
- Be dependable.
Required Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities)
- USA Cheer/NFHS Cheer Safety Certification
- USA Cheer High School Rules training
- USA STUNT Coach Certification
- American Red Cross CPR/First Aid
- NFHS Concussion in Sports course or similar training
- Any other credentialing required by the UPA Board, ED, and/or Athletics Director.
- Some experience as a competitive cheer coach at the high school or college level preferred.
- Pass a background check.

- Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time;
- Exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone,
- See and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids;
- Hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone;
- Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly, often in large noisy settings.
- Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.
