General Summary: Provide exceptional healthcare services to students, campers, daycare children, faculty, and staff while ensuring compliance with federal and state laws and standards, as well as the WI Nurse Practice Act. Collaborate to maintain good health, prevent disease, and promote a positive school culture that is inclusive and responsive to all members of the school community. Support summer camp programming by delivering essential healthcare to campers and staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Academic Year (August – May)
- Work approximately 2 days per week, from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM (7 hours/day), for ~38 weeks.
- Provide short-term care for acute injuries, illnesses, or crises (e.g., flu, cold, RSV).
- Provide long-term care for students/staff with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes).
- Administer medications as prescribed, maintaining safe storage and handling practices.
- Perform medical procedures as needed, adhering to the school nurse scope of practice.
- Provide healthcare education to students, parents, school employees, and the community.
- Counsel students on social-emotional issues, collaborating with school counselors as necessary.
- Maintain health and medical records in the school’s electronic medical record system.
- Monitor school health program compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Support the implementation of wellness programs to enhance community health.
- Educate staff on emergency medication administration and procedures.
- Respond to crises and manage emergency situations.
- Maintain immunization records and complete the state compliance report annually.
- Work with health departments and medical advisors on communicable disease management/reporting.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- 5 days per week, from 8:45 AM to 3:45 PM (7 hours/day), for approximately 10 weeks (all of June through the second week of August).
- Deliver healthcare services to campers and staff, including:
- Adhering to state laws, ACA regulations, and camp policies/procedures.
- Communicating with parents about injuries, medications, and camp health protocols.
- Managing first aid kits, emergency response equipment, and documenting incidents.
- Administering medications and performing health assessments.
- Ensuring compliance with camp health regulations.
- Responding to emergencies and managing crises as needed.
- Collaborating with camp staff to accommodate health needs and allergies.
- Maintaining health and medical records for campers and staff.
- After the second week of August, the nurse’s schedule reverts to two days per week (7-hour days), coinciding with the academic calendar resumption.
- Monitor the school health program’s compliance with federal, state, and local laws and policies.
- Educate and train employees on health protocols, including emergency procedures.
- Collaborate with school committees on health services, policies, and community initiatives.
- Update standing orders and policies as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of medical disorders, treatments, and emergency care.
- Excellent critical-thinking and assessment skills, particularly with children at various developmental stages.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to school health services.
- Ability to adjust to a year-round schedule that includes full-time summer hours.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically.
- High level of maturity, confidentiality, assertiveness, and independence.
- Proficiency in technology and maintaining medical documentation.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN)
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
- Current CPR/AED Certification
- 2-5 years of pediatric nursing or school nursing experience preferred
- Previous child healthcare or similar experiene strongly preferred.
