Middle School 6th Grade Science Teacher and Advisor

Schedule: Full-time, in-service to in-service, exempt
Reports to: Head of Middle School and subject-area Department Chair
Purpose: To inspire and motivate students and advisees toward personal growth, understanding, and a love of learning in a challenging, supportive, and developmentally appropriate environment
University School of Nashville (USN) seeks a dynamic and experienced science educator to join a high-functioning sixth-grade academic and advising team. The science teacher will join a well-established middle school science faculty and report to the Head of Middle School and the Chair of the Science Department. The middle school science curriculum emphasizes the scientific method, critical thinking, engineering design, and problem-solving skills throughout a range of content areas.
The sixth-grade course typically focuses on topics in physical science: engineering, forces, types of energy and the laws of motion, with some forays into seasons, moon phases, and the solar system. While the design and course content is flexible, the middle and high school science teachers work closely as a department to ensure a developmentally appropriate scope and sequence of courses that meet the needs of students and challenge them to grow in their skills and knowledge.
Responsibilities:
- Provide instruction for four sections of the assigned subject and assigned grade level(s)
- Serve as an advisor to approximately 16 students, including active supervision of a daily study-and-help period.
- Participate actively and collegially in meetings and initiatives of the grade-level team and the department.
- Take an active role in the school community's life, especially students' co-curricular activities.
- Assist with student activities as needed.
- Perform other duties as determined by the Head of Middle School and the Director of the school.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Licensure and/or bachelor’s degree in subject-area field; graduate degree preferred
- Knowledge of and experience working with middle school-aged students
- Experience with a diverse school community

The School
University School of Nashville is an independent, non-sectarian, co-educational day school with enrollment of over 1,000 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. In 1915, the George Peabody College for Teachers opened Peabody Demonstration School, USN’s predecessor, which earned acclaim for its curriculum and faculty. In 1974, Peabody College announced plans to close PDS, and a group of parents, alumni, students, and teachers reconstituted and re-chartered the school as University School of Nashville.
