What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant Liaison - OBGYN position at UNLV Medicine?
Working Under the direction of a physician. The Medical Assistant (MA) Liaison is responsible to assist patients in delivering high quality care and services while maintaining patient confidentiality at all times. The Medical Assistant (MA) Liaison receives incoming phone calls for clinic appointments from patients, nursing staff, and physicians. Responsible for the complete and accurate processing of appointment scheduling, pre-registration, insurance verification, and following through on all related health/medical questions/concerns.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Answers telephone calls according to designated scripting for the scheduling process.
- Maintains positive customer service at all times, referring unresolved issues to appropriate supervisor.
- Take medical background over the phone to ensure an in depth understanding of the issue and/concern
- Responds to patient questions directly by researching the correct information and if further research is needed then allow time to call the patient back by the end of the shift.
- Retrieve and responds to messages left on voicemail every 2 hours throughout 8 hour shift
- Checks and responds to patient portal messages in Epic every 2 hours throughout 8 hour shift
- Addresses refill requests while on the phone with patient to ensure either immediate follow-up with the pharmacy or an appointment made with the provider utilizing standing orders
- Addresses lab and imaging follow-up, and delays in ordering of any healthcare testing by troubleshooting the issue and ensuring same day follow up
- When speaking with the patient on the phone, gather all pertinent medical details by asking relevant questions to the issue being discussed. Confirm understanding and read back the issue to ensure that the information being gathered is accurate and correct prior to sending a message in Epic to the provider for further evaluation and follow up
- Functions effectively in a Matrix Management environment.
- Completes any duties and special assignments as requested.
- Assists with training as needed.
- Coordinates patients as directed by providers, company Standards and policies.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalency
- Current, nationally recognized Medical assistant Certification or Registration required or obtained within 90 days of employment.
- Knowledge of medical terminology required
- Good communication and customer service skills required
- Must maintain all required certifications or licenses
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum two years’ experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant
- Preferred Bilingual English/Spanish.
- Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification required
- Knowledge of CLIA and OSHA guidelines
- Knowledge of HIPAA laws and ability to adhere to confidentiality policies
- Knowledge of medical and pharmacology terminology and medical office procedures
- Excellent time management skills
- Working knowledge of patient management software and basic Microsoft office products. EPIC Preferred
- Ability to identify and apply proper communication methods in patient instruction
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent telephone and customer service skills
- Skill in applying and modifying principles, methods and techniques of a medical assistant to provide ongoing patient care
- Strong attention to detail skills
- Ability to work in a fast paced-environment and work well under pressure.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to maintain professionalism at all times.
- Skill in keyboard typing and use of multi-line telephone system
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- May include standing, sitting, and/or walking for extended periods.
- May include performing repetitive tasks.
- May include working on a special schedule (i.e. evenings and weekends with clients).
- May include working with challenging patients and clients.
- May include lifting up to 25 pounds.
