Position Summary:
The program manager will act as a consultant to the nursing schools within New Mexico to educate about UNMH nurse residency program (NRP) and recruit potential nurse residents. The manager will meet with nursing leadership to ensure structure and support systems are in place to successfully expand the NRP. The program manager is responsible for the assessment of orientation and training program needs, development, execution of program objectives, evaluation and ongoing improvement of the residency program to meet the evolving new graduate nurse needs as well as organization needs. The manager will work with the nurse residency educator and UNMH unit-based educators to revise, implement, and sustain a competency-based orientation for the nurse resident for all clinical areas. The nurse residency program manager will work with the director of the residency program, residency nurse supervisor, residency nurse educator to ensure consistency in program, implementation of innovative processes, and evaluation of program processes to ensure current program practices as those of other NRPs nationally. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.
Detailed responsibilities:
- PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
- PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
- PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
- PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
- PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
- EDUCATION - Refines and maintains the Nurse Residency Program to meet current educational and support needs of nurse residents
- EDUCATION - Fosters an environment that integrate the nurse resident into UNMH’s nursing mission, philosophy, and values for optimal nursing practices
- EDUCATION - Coordinates the entry of the graduate nurse resident into the program in tandem with residency RN supervisor and RN educator
- EDUCATION - Oversees implementation of the graduate Nurse Residency Program curriculum, in collaboration with the nurse residency director and Nurse Residency Program Advisory Committee, with input from nursing leadership
- EDUCATION - Assists with coordinating classes, skills labs, specialized courses, group sessions, and other activities that constitute the program curriculum, which are based on adult learning principles
- EDUCATION - Selects varied teaching strategies, as appropriate, for classroom and clinical experience; assists nurse residency RN educator with development and implementation of innovative models of instruction to support clinical learning in seminars and at the bedside
- MENTOR - Collaborates with nurse residency supervisor and educator to evaluates resident practice in collaboration with preceptors and unit-based educators; the nurse residency manager will recommend changes, as warranted, using an evidence-based approach to practice
- MENTOR - Provides leadership to preceptors and other educators in evaluating clinical performance against practice standards and providing feedback on performance to the new graduate nurse
- MENTOR - Interacts with staff in an ethical, consistent, fair, timely, appropriate, and decisive manner in accordance with hospital and nursing policies
- MENTOR - Works with all clinical areas to develop educational content to be applicable to the nurse resident during nurse residency seminars
- LEADERSHIP - Acts in a leadership role for the Nurse Residency Program, articulating program needs, and reporting program issues to the Director of Nursing Education and Development
- LEADERSHIP - Participates in Vizient Residency Program conference calls, seminars, advisory, and work groups to create a professional network, share expertise and experiences, and further develop the UNMH Nurse Residency Program
- LEADERSHIP - Functions as a liaison between disciplines and departments in assuring a smoothly coordinated residency program, including facilitating meetings, identifying and responding to
- LEADERSHIP - Communicates with Human Resources to facilitate recruitment of residents possessing the background and skills required for successful performance
- LEADERSHIP - Collaborates in the development and revision of policies and procedures pertinent to the program; the program evaluation and revision is performed in conjunction with national Vizient Residency guidelines
- LEADERSHIP - Identifies factors that affect the resident’s ability to learn and fulfill his/her job responsibilities, progression within the program, and retention and then communicates recommendations, as needed, to the preceptor and unit director
- LEADERSHIP - Actively participates in committee appointments to affect positive change in patient care and the system
- LEADERSHIP - Actively participates in strategic planning, ad hoc projects, and educational activities, as assigned by director of residency program
- LEADERSHIP - Promotes and cultivates positive relationships with academic programs to foster a positive image with the UNMH Nurse Residency Program
- LEADERSHIP - Manages the operational, personnel, and financial aspects of the Nurse Residency Program
- CONSULT - Serves as a consultant to clinical areas considering hiring new graduate nurses; helps assess unit/area readiness and ensures appropriate resources and structures are in place for successful expansion
- RESOURCES - Identifies when additional resources are needed to support the Nurse Residency Program and discusses with nursing leadership
- QUALITY - Regularly reviews Nurse Residency data and program outcomes to identify areas for improvement
