Vacancies exist for the position of Pre-Apprentice Relay Technician. Please see the attached job description and outline for the interview.
Normal Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- College level courses on electrical theory, Associate’s degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or Electrician certificate preferred.
- Related work experience in the electrical field preferred.
- Must possesses a valid up-to-date driver license
- An understanding of electrical theory and college algebra
- Ability physically bend, stoop, lift and climb, and carry tools for extended periods of time
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work harmoniously with fellow workers and customers maintaining a positive attitude
- Ability to work in the field on an all-day basis, overtime, holidays, weekends, inclement weather, and to travel for out-of-town work.
- Ability to work in a manner that prevents injury
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing

There will be a two-part testing procedure required for this position. The first step is a written technical skills test followed by a behavioral based interview. Passing score of the technical test must be met to move forward to the second step of a behavioral based interview.
After successful completion and passing the written technical skills test, an interview will be scheduled. An email confirmation will be sent with the date and time of the scheduled interview.
We are providing a study outline to prepare for the written technical skills test and the core competency interview. The outline is designed to maximize test results and centralize study times in the areas listed below:
Technical Skills Test Outline
Knowledge of the following:
- Basic math and algebra
- Basic electrical theory and terms
- Ability to make calculations using Ohms law
- Ability to identify electrical components
- Understanding of principals of AC circuits
- Safe Work practices
- OSHA/Safety Rules
Behavioral Based Interview
The interview is a behavioral based interview incorporating our Core Competencies. In this process we believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior and more recent behavior is a better predictor of future behavior than older behavior, and that long-standing trends are better predictors of behavior than isolated incidents. We therefore have patterned the questions during the interview to solicit behavior patterns that indicate with high predictability whether the candidate can perform the job as required. This type of interview is different than those that you may have taken in the past.
Position Description:
An employee who is in the entry classification in the section, and who is expected to perform all the basic duties and less skilled operations in connection with construction, operations and maintenance performed by personnel in the section to which he/she is assigned. This employee will be expected to move into a full apprenticeship at the time it is offered.
Position-Related Responsibilities:
Assist personnel in the department in the completion of daily tasks.
Perform work alone within the conformance of training and safe work practices.
Able to take directions and have a willingness to learn.
Able to work, overtime, holidays, weekends inclement weather and travel out for out-of-town work.
Will move into the formal apprenticeship when offered.
Perform assigned work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Company practices and procedures.
This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Become familiar with the basic skills inherent in the Journeyman classification in which they are aligned. Able to safely perform work within their training and ability.
Possess the ability to learn the required duties and the physical coordination necessary to use tools and equipment associated with his/her work area.
Have basic understanding and comply with all TEP safety rules and regulations.
Maintain high level of awareness and responsibility for environmental considerations that impact them, their jobs and the company to the level of their knowledge, training and experience.
Knowledge of basic electronics and algebra
Knowledge of basic electrical theory.
Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Possess a valid driver’s license.
Work harmoniously with fellow workers and customers.
