Position Description
The Senior Network Communications Engineer performs essential duties associated with the OSI layer 1 & 2 design, engineering and implementation of network and cellular devices. The individual will maintain the network communications infrastructure (OSI Layers 1-2) and provide guidance on improving network performance, security, and scalability. Collaborates with other work groups to maintain the network to standards (internal and regulatory). Coaches and councils management and other team members on design, quotes, layer 1 budget, new products and vendor relations.
Position-Related Responsibilities
• Mount telecommunications equipment, cellular equipment, routers, switches, wireless access points and cable trays. This includes using ladders and lifts and following safe working conditions practices in accordance with OSHA. Requires (as described below skills in related technical areas).
• Install cable pathway systems (cable trays, cable racks, J-hooks or D-rings) by using power or manual fasteners, drills or other power equipment.
• Institute, document and update test procedures on supported equipment.
• Pull, install, terminate and test CAT 6 and fiber optic cabling.
• Install and terminate data drops.
• Maintain existing and new cellular DAS systems, bi-directional antennas and cellular extenders.
• Maintain vendor relationships for quotes, updates on industry products and trends, training and other related vendor offerings.
• Work with supervisor on networking and communications budget.
• Create and maintain an inventory and stock process (manage in, out and replacements) for all layer 1 equipment and materials.
• Run new cabling in new or existing spaces. Examples but not limited to: CAT5e, CAT6, and 10gig 2
• Establishes voice and data networks by running, pulling, terminating, and fusion splicing copper and fiber optic cables.
• Manage vendor and manufacturer relationships.
• Work with IT Operations and other business areas on fiber and cabling requirements.
• Work with IT Operations and other business areas to locate, install, repair, terminate, assess, and certify fiber and cabling requirements as needed per job ensuring proper standards are followed per ANSI/TIA-568-C.
• Maintains customer rapport by listening to and resolving concerns and answering questions.
• Work with IT Operations and other business areas to properly engineer, design, install equipment, verify communications, and ensure proper practices are followed per IEEE Standards and NEC Code.
• Conduct in-house equipment training on any new or existing equipment to increase the knowledge of all technicians within the team.
• Update, create and maintain layer 1 documentation and logical diagrams throughout the company. This includes new and existing documentation.
• Remote work at UNS locations as needed.
• Work overtime hours as directed to complete business-critical jobs .
• Read building blueprints and diagrams.
• Lead and train technicians, helpers, and contractors when required. This includes working with subcontractors.
• Perform work assigned in a safe, efficient manner in accordance with company practices and procedures.
• Work on ladders, lifts and perform physical activities including, but not limited to, lifting heavy objects.
• The position includes operating and maintaining a work truck (keeping it clean, ensuring maintenance is completed by the mechanic group and keeping the supervisor apprised of any issues).
Senior Network Communications Engineer
• Engineer and design whole building network communications
• Engineer, design and build MDF and IDF build-outs.
• Engineer, design and build closets (mount and install backboards, cross connects, 66 Blocks, racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware).
• Design and engineer existing and new cellular DAS systems, bi-directional antennas and cellular extenders.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.)
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma and 5-10 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in layer 2 troubleshooting
- Experience with wireless installation and troubleshooting.
- Ability to perform wireless and cellular assessments, including the ability to use wireless survey tools like Ekahau.
- Knowledge of ITSM and its use in IT (or the ability to achieve within 1 year of hire)
- Knowledge of and use of problem, incident, and tracking ticketing systems and the ability to learn the Company’s System
- Ability to achieve entry-level security certification related to IT and this job description
- Knowledge of or ability to learn Data Center practices, engineering, and design of data center communication networking systems
- Detailed knowledge and experience or certification related to life safety: CPR, Fire safety, Electrical Safety etc. (Must attend TEP-related training events).
- Strong skills in documentation and design tools, examples, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint or similar
- Ability to read building blueprints and diagrams
- Ability to fusion slice
- Ability to collect, compile, and analyze statistical information and data, as well as interpret and apply laws and policies.
- Operate test equipment to include toners, twisted pair and cable scanners (Fluke)
- Must possess considerable knowledge of designing, engineering, maintaining and installing layer 1 network communication and network equipment
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups across business areas.
- Willing to work in tight, confined areas and stand in one place for long periods of time.
- Ability to use a variety of general and specialty hand tools and test equipment.
- Ability to carry and climb ladders as needed
- Willingness to work days, nights and weekends as required.
- Must provide a valid driver's license
- Must be able to be CIP certified
- Knowledge and prior use of IT problem ticketing systems

Preferred Qualifications
- Education may include being CNCI, or BICSI-certified or similar certifications
- CCNA Course Completion
- CCNA Certification
- Knowledgeable in codes, industry standards and best practices.
- Experience configuring network switches
- Experience in the configuration of devices to send logging data to data collection tools like SPLUNK and SolarWinds Orion
- Experience with tuning and troubleshooting DWDM solutions
- Experience troubleshooting cellular DAS systems
