What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corporate Safety Director position at Upchurch?
The Director of Safety is responsible for overseeing and leading the safety initiatives within Upchurch – spanning all lines of business. This individual will participate in the development, implementation, and enforcement of safety policies and procedures that promote a culture of safety, reduce risk, and ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The Director of Safety will work closely with the leadership team, field personnel, and project managers to ensure safety protocols are followed across all projects and job sites.
Key Responsibilities :
- Safety Program Development & Implementation :
- Participate in development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive safety programs tailored to the MEP and building automation industries.
- Continuously update and improve safety protocols to ensure the company stays ahead of industry standards and legal requirements.
- Establish and maintain systems for reporting, investigating, and addressing safety incidents and near misses.
- Act as the liaison with IT to assist with technology solutions for the safety program.
- Compliance & Risk Management :
- Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, local safety regulations, and company safety policies.
- Lead safety audits, inspections, and assessments to proactively identify potential hazards and reduce risks.
- Develop and manage safety training programs for all employees, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Develop and maintain system for policy documentation and updating to ensure complete safety program documentation.
- Safety Training & Education :
- Oversee the development of site-specific safety plans and training tailored to each project’s needs.
- Deliver or coordinate in-house and external safety training programs, including OSHA certifications, CPR, first aid, fall protection, and other industry-specific safety requirements.
- Ensure all employees are adequately trained and certified as required.
- Safety Leadership & Team Collaboration :
- Serve as the primary safety advisor to senior leadership, project managers, and field teams.
- Foster a safety-first culture by engaging employees at all levels and promoting open communication regarding safety concerns.
- Provide leadership and guidance to safety managers and field safety personnel across all job sites.
- Provide coaching and mentoring for all safety leaders.
- Manage third party vendors – used to scale operations, assist with remote jobs or emergency response work.
- Incident Investigation & Reporting :
- Lead thorough investigations of workplace accidents, injuries, and near misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Prepare and submit detailed safety reports to senior management, clients, and regulatory agencies.
- Maintain and analyze safety metrics to track performance, identify trends, and improve safety outcomes.
- Safety Equipment & PPE Management :
- Ensure that appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided to all employees, and that it is used correctly at all times.
- Oversee the proper maintenance and inspection of safety equipment, tools, and machinery used on job sites.
- Client & Regulatory Liaison :
- Act as the primary point of contact for safety-related matters with clients, subcontractors, and regulatory bodies.
- Stay current with changing safety regulations and industry standards, ensuring the company remains in full compliance.
- Emergency Response Planning :
- Develop and implement emergency response and evacuation plans tailored to project sites.
- Conduct regular drills and training to ensure readiness in the event of an emergency.
