Chicago Steel powered by UPG is looking for a CDL Class A Truck Driver for its private fleet at our Gary, IN facility. The CDL Truck Driver safely operates a commercial motor vehicle (semi-tractor & flatbed trailer) in interstate commerce delivering loads to our customers as scheduled. This is accomplished through close adherence to DOT regulations, company policies/procedures, and continuing/refresher training. Our CDL Class A Drivers average 80k - 90k per year.

Primary Responsibilities
- Drives in a safe manner, following local and state laws, DOT regulations, and maintaining proper following distance.
- Ensures vehicles are properly maintained and equipped with required safety equipment.
- Turns vehicles in for periodic maintenance and for necessary repairs, keeping a record of vehicle inspections as required by regulation and company policy.
- Turns in Bills of Lading according to company policy and procedures.
- May be required to place and remove large protective tarps to allow access to load and unload trailer.
- Uses heavy chains, ratchet binders, lever binders, ratchet straps, metal coil racks, and 4x4 boards to secure loads.
Position Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2 years verifiable trucking experience.
- Preferred experience with hauling steel and steel coil.
- Valid Class-A CDL and current & valid medical card.
- No at fault DOT recordable crashes in the past 3 years.
- No major moving violations during the past 1 year.
- No positive drug screens, or refusal to test.
- No convictions for reckless driving or following too closely in a commercial vehicle.
- Driver must be enrolled in the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse prior to applying for employment as a CDL Driver. Driver will be required to submit to a hard query upon consideration for employment.
- Properly maintains a Driver Record of Duty Status, logging driving activities, and ensuring compliance with DOT regulations regarding hours-of-service as required.
- Must be able to stoop, bend, and kneel frequently as they secure the loads. Oftentimes they are required to climb up and down from the trailer to secure or check on the securement of the loads.
- Drivers may at times be required to drive several hours at a time, meaning extended sitting and little activity for long periods followed by short bursts of activity during loading or unloading.
