Job Description : The UPMC Histocompatibility Laboratory is seeking a dedicated Medical Lab Technician or Medical Lab Scientist to join our team on a full-time basis. This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop and expand your skills in the field of histocompatibility and immunogenetics, while working with a highly skilled team in a state-of-the-art laboratory environment. The schedule is daylight hours Monday through Friday, with rotating on-call responsibilities. \n While working in our lab, you will have a chance to complete on-the-job training, including the opportunity to become certified with American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI)!\nApplicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Medical Lab Technician's salary starts at $22.76 / hour. \nMLS / MLT roles are eligible for a generous sign-on bonus of up to $15,000! \n Responsibilities : \n\nFollow established procedures for the collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing of specimens for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of the sample.\nPerform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.\nRecognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and initiate the necessary corrective action according to established protocols. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and act as outlined in predetermined protocols.\nOperate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs. Use reagents and supplies cost-effectively; monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory.\nMaintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments, their interrelationships and physiological conditions affecting test results.\nConduct, direct, or assist with test development and methodology / equipment evaluation, selection, and implementation.\nPerforms High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) without direct supervision.\nAssume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section / department temporarily as delegated.\nTrain and orient new employees, students, and residents, as applicable and as assigned.\nMedical Lab Technician : \n\nAssociate's degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), OR \nBachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience OR \nEquivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing. \nMinimum 1 year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is preferred. \n\nMedical Lab Scientist : \n\nBachelor of Science degree from an accredited college / university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, OR \nBachelor of Science degree from an accredited college / university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification, OR \nBachelor of Science degree from an accredited college / university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory \nPrefer 1-year experience in a hospital laboratory.
