UPMC Presbyterian is seeking an exceptional Lead Pharmacist for Perioperative Services to elevate pharmaceutical care and optimize patient outcomes throughout the surgical continuum. This is a full-time daylight position that works 40 hours per week, and the department is looking for someone with flexibility for weekends and evenings based on patient care and department/organizational needs. 

Purpose:

Ensure the timely provision of cost-effective drug therapy contributing to optimal patient outcomes, provide experimental education for present and future health care practitioners, and support drug-related research.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate daily activities of pharmacy technicians and pharmacists in their area of practice/responsibility.
  • Demonstrate a service orientation toward patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Coach and mentor staff through feedback, positive discipline, and performance evaluations.
  • Direct and schedule personnel assigned to the team, authorizing extra hours and overtime as required.
  • Develop and implement workflow guidelines, policies, and procedures to maximize productivity and standardize practices.
  • Collaborate with team members to evaluate workflow and implement service improvements.
  • Facilitate quality improvement and cost-reduction initiatives based on JCAHO indicators and department target drug monitoring projects.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with Clinical Director, Primary Care Nurses, and Physicians to handle patient care issues.
  • Conduct meetings with pharmacy team members and healthcare team members to facilitate service changes and improvements.
  • Complete staff competencies and perform duties of a staff pharmacist, including medication order evaluation and drug information provision.
  • Supervise daily activities and assist in training and education of pharmacy technicians and student interns.
  • Provide timely, comprehensive, and accurate drug information to physicians, nurses, patients, and personnel of other departments.
  • Support drug-related research by assisting in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of study drugs.
  • Audit and maintain accurate records for all controlled substances, ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and Department Regulations.
  • Maintain professional competency through participation in continuing education and staff development programs, including formal and informal in-service education activities.
