What are the responsibilities and job description for the Oncology Data Specialist position at UPMC?

As an Oncology Data Specialist, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and accuracy of our clinical data registry.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Abstracting Functions: Perform abstracting functions at UPMC Western Maryland and other assigned UPMC facilities, standalone cancer centers, or office locations.
- Professional Interaction: Interact effectively, courteously, and tactfully with physicians and other healthcare professionals to promote the registry and motivate its use.
- Daily Operations: Perform daily registry operations in accordance with UPMC Network Registry policies and procedures.
- Data Management: Abstract and code core clinical data using appropriate classification systems; analyze medical records according to guidelines and requirements of UPMC, American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Pennsylvania Department of Health (if located in Pennsylvania), and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO).
- Follow-Up Data: Obtain long-term follow-up data for end results reporting.
- Follow-Up Success Rate: Maintain a follow-up success rate of at least 90% for cases abstracted within a five-year timeframe and 80% for the entire database.
- Timely Abstracting: Ensure timely and complete abstracting reviews at the required standard based on the annual caseload.
- Data Quality: Maintain a data quality level of at least 97% for data items reviewed, in accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Health standards (if located in Pennsylvania).
- Compliance: Perform other functions and tasks to maintain a current and accurate database, ensuring compliance with UPMC, ACoS, Pennsylvania Department of Health, and JCAHO requirements.
