Are you a pharmacy student who’s interested in engaging in an internship with a well-rounded inpatient pharmacy experience to prepare for clinical rotations and a fulfilling pharmacist career in the future? Consider joining our team as a Pharmacy Intern!

First-year pharmacy interns gain experience in general inpatient pharmacy operations while performing pharmacy technician duties including pharmacy automation operation, sterile room compounding, medication cabinet restock and more. Second and third-year interns transition to the medication reconciliation team in Emergency Department and will participate in completion and documentation of medication histories. Our interns can take advantage of the opportunity to shadow our clinical pharmacists in critical care, emergency medicine, neonatal care, and internal medicine units as time permits.

First- and second-year interns will be required to work a minimum of two 8-hour weekend shifts every two-week pay period and a minimum of one 5-hour weekday shift every week (total of at least 400 hours per year to meet institutional guidelines). The third-year interns will be required to work a minimum of two 8-hour weekend shifts every month (total of at least 200 hours per year). Additionally, interns will be expected to work minimum of 2 holidays per year.

Applicants who do not yet have their pharmacy intern license with the Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy will be considered as a Pharmacy Assistant and will transition to Pharmacy Intern once the licensure is received.

 

What can you look forward to facilitating in this exciting internship?

  • Assist pharmacists with medication distribution, including delivering medications, restocking automated dispensing cabinets, and managing emergency medication carts.
  • Participate in filling medication orders and performing prepackaging tasks to ensure timely delivery.
  • Prepare IV admixtures, chemotherapy, and controlled substance orders following strict protocols to ensure patient safety and compliance.
  • Conduct medication reviews by entering orders into the computer system, monitoring patient allergies.
  • Complete departmental documentation and billing processes by the end of each shift, including dispensing records, refrigerator logs, and controlled substance delivery records.
  • Utilize information systems and robotics to prepare medication labels and support the efficient dispensing of medications.
  • Demonstrate a service-oriented approach in all interactions, ensuring a positive and professional image while addressing patient and staff needs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment, adhering to safety and operational standards at all times.

 
As a Pharmacy Assistant, there is opportunity to -

  • Provide and receive information via telephone, in person, or in writing to hospital personnel, patients, and visitors.
  • Refer drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists for accurate guidance.
  • Assist in the distribution of medications, including emergency carts and controlled substances, following department policies and regulations.
  • Prepare oral medications for patients, ensuring correct timing and dosage for administration.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment to ensure efficiency and safety.
  • Comply with all federal and state regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA, while ensuring proper medication handling and documentation.
