Observation/Short Stay Acute Care Unit (3 South): a 23-bed unit for adult medical-surgical patients needing care after failed outpatient treatment, unsuccessful emergency department care, or post-procedure recovery. It focuses on stabilizing patients, reassessing for discharge, or hospital admission.

Purpose: The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who sets the standards for care quality and is accountable for nursing care. They manage patient care for groups of patients and their families, using independent judgment and teamwork. Their role includes leadership, collaboration, and supervision, maintaining relationships with healthcare providers and patients to achieve desired outcomes. They are committed to the community and the nursing profession.
Responsibilities:
- Develops and maintains productive working relationships, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment.
- Understands cultural differences and holds peers accountable for healthy relationships. Balances work and personal life, models safe work hours, and communicates safety hazards.
- Applies adult learning principles in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff. Provides detailed teaching to patients and families for care episodes and transitions.
- Supports the development of students, new staff, and colleagues, may serve as a preceptor. Creates an environment of open dialogue and continuous development.
- Applies the nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment. Formulates daily goals and care plans with patients, considering holistic needs.
- Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying clinical and safety issues. Practices solid communication, articulates patient conditions, and recommends care changes.
- Ensures comprehensive patient documentation to promote caregiver communication. Incorporates professional and organizational goals to improve patient safety and satisfaction.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Builds healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues. Engages in professional development and unit-based governance.
