    JOB DESCRIPTION


    The head coach is directly responsible to the athletic director. With athletic director approval the head coach is responsible for all aspects of his/her sport.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    A. Organizational and Administrative

    1. In cooperation with the Athletic Director, arrange an organizational meeting for candidates before the start of the season. Parent/Physician Certificates and insurance forms may be distributed at this time.

    2. Attend the physical examination for your sport. (This is a good time to fill out eligibility sheet and to collect all other forms.)

    3. Complete the eligibility sheet and return it along with the
    parent/physician certificates, insurance waver forms, Form A, to the Athletic Director before the first practice.

    4. Issue equipment and maintain an accurate log of issued equipment and see that the Athlete takes care of equipment in his/her care.

    5. Plan and organize practices and coordinate junior/senior program.

    6. Assign duties to assistants, including junior high coaches.

    7. Administer pre-game details, home and away, as necessary.

    8. Thoroughly familiarize yourself with and explain to your athletes the P.I.A.A. and league rules and regulations regarding amateur status, eligibility, and the responsibilities of athletes

    9. Inform your team of, and enforce, the P.I.A.A. and school
    regulations regarding scholastic and attendance requirements
    for students to participate in athletics.

    10. Select student managers and instruct them in their responsibilities and conduct.

    11. Supervise and maintain discipline in locker room, home and away, on bus, and in the game. Attend all practices and games.

    12. A coach, head or assistant, should be the last one out of the building following practice and games. All lights and showers should be off and doors locked.

    13. At the end of the season collect all equipment and uniforms, see that they are cleaned and stored in the proper storage areas.

    14. At the end of the season give the A.D. the following information on the proper forms:

    a. Inventory: noting which equipment is in need of repair,
    should be discarded, and which, if any, athlete(s) failed to return equipment, and a list of such equipment.

    b. Report of players including: numbers of players starting season, number ending the season, number and names of letter winners, names of any who receive awards (ex.: - all conference).

    c. These should be submitted within two (2) weeks of the end of the season.

    d. Compile a record of your season; high scorer, win-loss, top scorer, top rebounder, most pins, best times, (possible) school records, etc. This should be to the A.D. within one (1) month of the end of the season.

    15. Requisition equipment and supplies for your sport.

    16. Recommend to A.D. and principal the retention or replacement of individuals on your staff.

    17. Be present and award letters and trophies at award ceremonies.

    18. Security of Valuables.

    B. Coaching Methods and Techniques

    1. Treat all players in a fair, unprejudiced manner.

    2. Coach and instruct team in proper, fundamental skills, constantly upgrading to the fullest technical skill level, to enable the athlete to compete in the best manner possible.

    3. Use sound, modern conditioning methods to assure that the athlete is in top physical condition and to lessen the chance of injury.

    4. Be acquainted with the physical, social, mental, and psychological make-up of your players, and understand how it can affect their play.

    5. Work closely with the athletic trainer in the treatment and
    rehabilitation of injured athletes.

    C. Personal Characteristics, and Training

    1. Enjoy working with young people.

    2. Have a basic, fundamental, knowledge and understanding of the sport you are coaching.

    3. Set a good example for your assistants and your team.

    4. Teach athletes to win through fair play.

    5. Control your temper, do not make a spectacle of yourself, at practice or games, and expect the same of your athletes.

    6. Constantly study, analyze, and improve your competency in your sport.

    7. Remember, at all times, no one sport is bigger than the school. Be ethical in your relationship with players and your assistant, coaches of other sports, administrators, the public, and the press. Support and promote the other sports teams, don't solicit players from them, or talk athletes out of participating to concentrate on your sport. We are not big enough to have specialists. If one of us suffers, we all suffer.

    D. Public Relations

    1. Attend, as able, booster club meetings.

    2. Set the pattern for wholesome public relations within the school, the community and with other schools.

    3. Interpret your program to community as part of the complete
    educational program.

    4. Treat officials in a respectful manner; you may disagree with them but you need not be disagreeable.

    5. Treat opponents as quests at home contests.

    6. Control your actions at games. The team and the fans follow your example.

    7. Maintain friendly relations with the news media.
