The Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center is seeking a Peer Advocate to join our team. This position is a terrific opportunity for someone to gain additional experience and make a difference in the lives of our clients.
For over 45 forty-five years, our organization has provided mental health and holistic services in northern Manhattan for families, children, adolescents, and other adults including the elderly in a supportive and caring environment. We also have an out-patient and residential substance abuse program as well as a Therapeutic Preschool for 3-5 year olds.
Upper Manhattan Mental Health Center is a Certified National Health Service Corps (NHSC) site.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title : Peer Advocate
Department : Addictive Treatment Services
Hours : 35 hrs., Monday - Friday
Union : Union position
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Contributes to the development of the ethical framework for delivery of recovery services and conducts all peer advocacy activities within this framework.
- Contributes to the development of resources for long-term supports and services.
- Engages with assigned program participants; reviews a recovery plan with each participant.
- Engages in problem-solving activities with each participant to improve daily living skills.
- Acts as a role model for effective health and recovery maintenance activities; promotes abstinence from AOD.
- Provides guidance, recovery-focused peer support services.
- Engages in recovery support activities with participants.
- Escorts participants to long-term services and support appointments based on participants' preferences.
- Conducts outreach activities.
- Organizes and participates in community-based recovery support activities and events.
- Delivers face-to-face services.
- Facilitates weekly Peer-to-Peer recovery support groups.
- Maintains weekly Peer Advocate contact log.
- Conducts educational presentations for providers of local recovery support services.
- Conducts educational presentations to groups of prospective Peer Advocates.
- Conducts educational presentations to groups of prospective participants.
