ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF AN UPPER SIOUX POLICE OFFICER
The duties of an Upper Sioux Police Officer include:
patrol highways and roads, promote safety, direct traffic, and investigate
traffic accidents.
enforce traffic laws, arrest offenders, and appear as a witness in court.
provide routine and emergency assistance to the motoring public; and
Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in the pursuit and
apprehension of violators of criminal laws.
Police officers work an eight to ten-hour day, approximately 40 hours per week,
including Saturdays, Sundays, nights, and holidays as required.
The essential functions of a Minnesota Upper Sioux Police Department require the
following abilities:
1. The ability to communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing.
2. The ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
3. The ability to be mobile for long periods, including but not limited to standing,
walking, running, jumping, crawling, stooping, kneeling, crouching; and
entering and exiting a vehicle several times each day.
4. The ability to work in changing environmental conditions including but not
limited to exposure to dust, disagreeable odors, eye irritants (e.g., tear gas),
and inclement weather.
5. The ability to work in a confined space. Most Upper Sioux Police
Departments are required to ride in a squad car for long periods each day;
and must also have the ability to conduct building searches and respond to
calls which might require entering small, confined spaces.
6. The ability to see well enough to perform patrol duties, detect crime, complete
arrest procedures, write necessary reports, and utilize personal computers.
7. The ability to hear well enough to perceive detailed information through oral
communication including radio, electronic, and telephone; as well as to
perform patrol duties and detect possible crime and/or calls for assistance.
8. The ability to competently use departmental issued handgun, shotgun, rifle,
baton, computers and other standard law enforcement equipment.
9. The ability to stand on a hard surface for prolonged periods of time (e.g.,
directing traffic).

16. Officers are required to be in an on-call status when they are at home and not
scheduled to work. One purpose of this is to have a Officers respond to
emergencies when there may not be an on-duty officer available to respond.
On-call status may be any time of day including nights, holidays, weekends,
